Also, it would be great if it could be compressed as something other than the original avi that they are. Thanks!

So I used my digital camera to take short movies of our baby. They are around 4MB and I was wanting to just use a portion of the clip where she smiles etc. to compress so I can email it out to family and such. I tried imovie but it seems like it only works with the whole avi and won't let me segment it.

if you can import it into imovie then use the apple + T (split video clip at playhead) and cut up the video with that and then use the clip you want and export it.

otherwise:

get quicktime pro and use the little triangles to select how much you want and then save it as a new file.
