Here's a pretty nice Photoshop alternative. You will need X11 installed to use it.

To tell you the truth, I am unsure if it comes preinstalled on new Macs or not. If not, then you can find X11 on your OS X install discs. You may need Pacifist to extract it from the install disc to keep from having to do a complete install of OS X.

To check if you have it installed already, just open your Applications/utilities folder and look for the X11 application.

I believe the latest version of X11 is available for free from Apple's web site. Should just be a .dmg with a package in it, IIRC.

or if you don't want to deal with X11 and can deal with a slightly less capable application give Graphic Converter a try - it's shareware.

gimp isn't ready for non-geeks... and the only people that say otherwise are geeks.

There really isn't anything even in the realm of photoshop... not even gimp on it's best day.

I would pick up Photoshop Elements for $99

It does 85% of what Photoshop does (minus many pro features that novices would never use or need)

Um, neither is Photoshop in that instance. The gimp is pretty much just as complex/simple to use as Photoshop is... I think you are forgetting that Photoshop itself is a big bad mother of an app with lots of hidden and "geeky" features that aren't immediately apparent to the first time user, and that it takes a lot of user time to get the full benefit of the app. IMO of course.

Don't even consider this version of GIMP! They charge you a ridiculous amount of money for something that should be free. The best GIMP is Gimp.app, which someone already linked to.

A. You're wrong.
B. It's free, so he might as well try it out anyway.

I've moved entirely to GIMP for my image manipulation needs, though I admit that my needs are relatively simple. Yes, it takes a little bit of getting used to, but so did Photoshop for that matter.
