Hi all,

My father's a pianist and we are looking for some software that will allow him to record his playing and produce (1) musical notation for what he played (2) an audio recording that can be burned to CD. I bought him iLife '04 so he could record with GarageBand, but he is unhappy because of the lack of musical notation. If someone could be suggest a program to us, it's be much appreciated.

Mac in Touch recently did several days worth of talking about music notation software. Here's the link: http://www.macintouch.com/musicnotation.html

I hope this helps.

Basically the two major programs for music notation are Finale and Sibelius. Finale is the most widely used right now, sort of the Microsoft Office of music notation. However, its interface can be pretty weird sometimes. Sibelius is said to have a much better interface, and they generally are much more Mac-friendly (Finale didn't even have an OS X version until last year). But they have a smaller user base, and of course, neither program can save in the other's file format.

Best thing to do is probably to go to a university's music library where they will have both installed. Try them both, and see which you like better.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

They both also have demos, so you can download those and try them
