Virex 7.5 is now gone (without explanation as usual) and replaced with 7.2.1. I have installed and used 7.5 without problems so far. Should I get rid of 7.5 ASAP or just leave it on? If I should take it off, is there a recommended method to uninstall?

The recommended method to uninstall is the uninstall script that can be found on the Virex 7.5 disk image.
At the Apple support forums there are some reports of deleted Mail mailboxes, so I would not trust the delete or repair file features and set it to notification only. Virex also uses a lot of CPU time. You have to decide yourself if that's worth it for the protection against the zero OS X viruses.

I couldn't get it to install at all on my PM G5 1.8. The installer would hang every time.

I'd say it was pulled because it's crapware.
Activity Monitor shows (minus the emoticons):
VShield (Hung)
VshieldCore (Hung)
VshieldBkgd (Hung)
VshieldUpdate (Hung)
The manual scanning seems to work but it takes hours to scan whereas the old version took less than an hour for the same number of files.
Not ready for prime time.
Now on a positive note, Wingnuts is pretty cool and lots of fun. So, I'd say .mac comes out about even this time around.

Hmm . . . mine looks the same except it has the emoticons!!!!!
jk, I haven't seen anything bad yet, but then again, it hasn't had to do anything yet.

Mine has been working fine. That being said I do not set it to delete file by default. I have it notify me.
Also, as msuper69 posted, it atkes a very long time for it to scan now. I originally had it set to scan the root on startup but after a restart from a software update that was taking forever I ended that and have it only scan my home folder. That still takes quite a while but not near as long. I also have it set to scan mounted volumes in the background and that takes way too long also. I have a basic copy of OSX on my iPod as well as my songs (10gb's total) and I finally quit that too for how long it was taking. I don't mind the program but it needs to scan way faster than it does right now.

Other threads on this but 7.5 had lots of reports of deleting a user's entire mailbox if a virus was detected. Pretty serious stuff.

Not quite, sir. This thread is about, at least in part, how Virex 7.5 was deleting Mail boxes. Being that Mail sucks and Thunderbird is a teriffic alternative (and what I use and since I am cool and hence everyone should do what I do because while it won't make them cool it will make them less dirty) and it would also avoid the issue.

And Thunderbird is impervious to deletion from a buggy version?
Whether you care for Mail or not is besides the point. You're happy with thunderbird, so stick with it. That doesn't change the fact that Virex 7.5 was pulled because of multiple problems reported with it. Again, let me repeat. Virex 7.5 was the problem. Not Mail. Not Virex 7.2, nor anything else.

You're not cool if you have to tell others that you're cool. You're cool when others tell you that you. And it seems you're not cool, but chilly. And chilly ain't cool.

Chilled, yes. Chilly, no.
But seriously, going back to your T-bird, I've not used it. How exactly is a mailbox in it delete-proof from some wack app such as 7.5?

Chillmeister,
Not sure. All I know this Virex issue is Mail.app only. I loathe mail.app cause, well, it sings to the chickens and not me.

Virex 7.5's problems were Mail.app only?! Proof?
