$49 upgrade from 7.5

Looks like a lot of new features some of which will help me.

The ones that stand out:
- Built in HTMLTidy
- bbdiff command line tool
- syntax checking
- SFTP support (Not sure if new in 8.0)
- Multiple windows drawer!!!!
- speeling checker

BBEdit's improvements always seem to border on the just-enough-to-increase-the-version status. I've evaluated it, and I like the new interface enhancements like highlighting the current line. And the drawer is a great step (not to mention Apple-tilde now switches between windows thank god).

On the downside:
1. They haven't added ANY new colors for syntax coloring. Come-on! 3 Colors????

2. It appears by default documents open in new windows. To get a document in the side drawer you have to drag it there. There's no "Open new documents in drawer" option.

3. Shell script functions are still not accessible via the function menu. This feature is a crime.

4. Still can't fully manage CVS (create and import projects).

I'd love to be proven wrong on these. So far, the best thing this update has done for me has been to introduce me to Affrus, a complete Perl IDE with some awesome features. Where has this app been all my life? I'm amazed at the great apps Mac developers keep churning out.

Yeah, they just seem to add enough for me to drop the $49 to get the next version.

I don't use BBedit everyday (wish I did) but when I need it, boy is it handy.

I just purchased 7 in August and downloaded the free upgrade to version 8. I can't click "continue" on the first window that comes up asking for a serial # or to leave it blank for the demo. Anyone else have this issue? The continue button is greyed out no matter what i do!

Im really excited about the PHP live preview feature.

Have you selected the new window/multiple window pref at the top of the dialog?

DOH! Thanks. I just looked at the Read Me and it explains that as well. Thanks for the answer. It was frustrating.

For $50 I won't be upgrading. I do give them credit for supplying a demo that lets me make an informed choice. Perhaps they should through in Super Get Info for owners of 7 that upgrade.

Email them, I'd be real surprised to see it not working on a lower version of Panther. Of course Jaguar may be a whole different ball of wax.

the demo shows up with a dialog stating the need for 10.3.5

might be for the demo only but their requirements page says 10.3.5

The paid version won't launch without 10.3.5 either, which is a shame since 10.3.5 breaks some stuff on my machine.

if anyone else hates that icon click over here:

I think this one by Jon Hicks I think is better than the older BBEdit icon.

I think BBEdit's time has past. Paying $179 for a text editor these days is simply too much. If you have a fast modern Mac (anything upwards from a 800MHz G4), the jedit from http://jedit.org, offers all the features and much much more in the form of hundreds of plug-ins. I love it, it's open source, free and fantastically extensible.

Is there any way to trick BBedit into thinking you have 10.3.5 installed? Where does it look to find out the OS version? I can't use 10.3.5 but i live the new BBEdit. Thanks.

Very true.
I'm looking forward to TextMate myself, as seen on this page linked from the Hicksdesign page.

I think I tend to agree. BareBones is the hero to many old school Mac developers. They pay their rent by knowing how to use BBEdit. Now however the Mac developer community is seeing an influx of refugees from Linux, Windows, and other Unix systems. They're not terribly keen on the idea of a $180 text editor that does what several GNU command line tools do if you read their manuals. TextWrangler is a good start but I don't know that $50 is necessarily a good price for what emacs does for free.

I just had to jump in and mention subethaedit.

The ability to collaborate on a document in real time via the net is very cool. That combined with iChat has saved me a ton of $2.00/GAL. Gas.

I'm Mac-centric enough that jedit seems a bit foreign to me.

It looks very good, especially if you're a ruby fan . The project management feature is simply the best one, although jedit has this as well plus the beanshell java macro language.

Now that it's finally got split pane editing, and Reg Ex searches, there's no reason for me to use anything else. I whish text editing was a bit faster though, and what is the problem with '_' characters ?

I just wanted to chirp in that jedit while a nice text editor with syntax highlighting for lots of languages ... it has one major flaw on pretty much every platform.... its incredibly slow.
Another problem I have with jedit is that the interface is very very cluttered... i like a nice neat interface that is not 'all over the place'.
To be honest, I would have to use the latest eclipse any day over jedit... its just a nicer development interface and for me anyway, is faster with code completion and highlighting.

I cannot agree to this. Not at all.

I use jedit for coding since years. And I did not find any operation that was executed with a noticible delay. You can click where ever you like and boom, done. Speedwise for me it feels like nedit or emacs which are both far from being slow.
I cannot imagine how you can associate jedit with slow. Its an example for an extremely well coded and managed java program. And among all available editors, java or not java, one of the best.

I use jedit on windows (rarely) and on linux (every day). On Macs I use BBedit. I must say that on OS X jedit does not compete with the clean look and the perfect functionality of BBEdit. And java is slow on Macs. That maybe the reason where your perception comes from. But thats apples fault. They did a good integration of java into Mac OS but performance is far behind windows or linux implementations.

The one and only thing that I don't like in jedit is the lack of a method/function parser that is accessible by a toolbar icon like in BBedit. There is a quite useful plugin for jedit (CodeBrowser) that does a good job, but...not perfect.

Did anyone try pepper? I used it for a while, its also a very good editor but it always failed in the linux version because it clutters the filesystem with .pepperstate directories that contain format information. On Macs and Windows pepper works very good (and its affordable).

Wow, that is one crazily good program, the project management feature is incredible!

I think I'll be buying this little cracker.

Thanks for the heads-up.
