Fennel Software ( fennel.free.fr) is glad to announce the immediate availability of its new donationware for Mac OS X (Panther): fennel DVDManager v1.0.
Following the footsteps of the popular—but now discontinued—biakfennel DVDManager, this new DVD manager is meant to help you manage the workflow of your DVDs (and not to build an extensive, highly-detailed database of your DVD library.)
Simple, yet efficient, really lightweight (492 KB), speedy, "free", perfect Aqua Guidelines compliance for a clean+intuitive interface, massive adoption of Mac OS X technologies, localized in 9 languages, etc. It's now waiting for you to enhance your digital life !

awesome program, just what i needed. unless i missed it, the only thing i would ask for is an easier way to rate movies (other than going to edit them and then enter a star number... a context menu option would be perfect)
great program

> an easier way to rate movies
Matching iTunes's behaviour is obviously planned… but we recently decided to release often—i.e. as soon as a feature is entirely functional—instead of when it's perfect ! So, our users get the feature sooner… while we're implementing a better solution for the next updates !
> a context menu option would be perfect
Thanks for the idea! iTunes's behaviour is not ready for prime time yet, but a contextual alternative method could help our users wait for it… Thx again MaxPower2k3 !

I don´t know if the follow is even of use, but do you think that once you fill the DVD name field it could show you previous names that are yet similar or identical to the one you are submiting?, you can think that since you can select several retrieved DVDs at once, that feature has no interest, but well, it came to my mind once I did several similar retrieves several times along the day.

another small thing that came to mind while using the program is some kind of batch-movie adding. the only difference would be that when you did the amazon lookup, when you add the movie, keep the sheet open so you can search for another movie immediately. it would make things much easier when adding lots of movies at a time so you don't have to keep re-opening that sheet after every movie.

Cool. I really like it so far but I have a couple of suggestions.
No default question marks. It's annoying when getting info from Amazon that field with no info are defaulted to question marks. This requires an edit to delete, which should be unnecessary.
Multiple genres. If a DVD set if from a series, I'd also like to say what kind of series it was.
Performance. The longer the list of results from Amazon is, the slower getting them is. In fact, I had a crash just a second ago when I searched for Jones (because it didn't find the Indiana Jones Trilogy when I searched for Indiana Jones). I'm assuming this is something memory related. (Side note: I can't seem to find the Indiana Jones Trilogy Set)
At a glance or tooltip status info. I shouldn't have to hit a button to see who I lent (or am borrowing a DVD from) a DVD to.
Get more info. More detailed info from Amazon (sound type, aspect ration, commentary info, etc.).
Not having to manually activate editing. Or putting the edit button on the edit panel.
You column view isn't centered right in the window. The space on the left side is greater than on the right.
I think that's all for now.

angelmb: We plan to add such a completion-oriented feature for the directors; but we don't think it's worth adding it for the titles. Sorry…
MaxPower2k3: Both suggestions (Contextual edition of the rating + "Retrieve & Continue") are now ready to be rolled out! They'll thus be part of our forthcoming new version. Thanks again for your feedback!

Thinine: Here are answers to some of your comments; but please contact us directly (fennel AT free DOT fr) for an improved+specific answer. Thx in advance.
Question marks are intentionally there to remind the user that edition is needed on some fields.
Multiple genres are coming… So please be patient.
Performance is highly tied to network, Amazon servers, and services. Please note we're however committed to constantly improving it when we're aware of issues, and where we have means to interact.
You already can quickly see who you lent a DVD to by adding the "Contact" column (through our "Show View Options" menu item.)
Reminder: fennel DVDManager is not meant to build an highly-detailed database of your DVD library (w/ aspect ratio, sound formats, etc.), but rather to help you manage the workflow of your DVDs; thus, we won't add details that don't help you to quickly solve practical problems like choosing a DVD for tonight, or lending another one to a friend, etc. Hope you understand…
Since we're managing DVDs, editing is obviously "temporary"; so it *has* to be invoked. We're aware of cons regarding the current mechanism though, and we're working on some update on this front. So stay tuned !
At last, you're right: our table view is not centered… but we're following Apple Human Interface Guidelines here, to take into account the "DVD Library:" header. Sorry…
Hope this helps…

Just released fennel DVDManager v1.2… In a few words, it delivered an improved+customizable HTML export, support for "Run Time" data, sports some enhancements regarding our handling of the ratings, features a complete French documentation, and provides a new "Amazon (AT)" source for retrieving your data.

A quick post to inform you that fennel DVDManager v1.2.1 is out. This maintenance release only fixes a bug that may have affected some users who've been migrating from biakfennel DVDManager v2; this update is not required if you're not experiencing issues when adding/removing DVDs, and then restoring your DVD library. Sorry for the inconvenience…

We'd like to inform you that we've just released a new version of fennel DVDManager (fsDM v1.3).
Our simple, yet efficient DVD manager finally offers the highly requested French-based source (DVDFr) for retrieving your DVD details; it also allows you to synchronize your IMDb or DVDFr-based entries for getting an up-to-date DVD library. Moreover, version 1.3 adds some performance boost regarding your IMDb retrievals.
Now, it's time for you to visit our Web site ( http://fennel.free.fr/dvdmanager/) for downloading your copy of fsDM v1.3 !

fennel DVDManager is now at v1.4…
In a few words, the shining star of this release is the new Update action; the users of the recently added French-based source (DVDFr) might also welcome the bug fixes embedded in this new version. Please see the "What's New?" section of our "Read Me.rtf" file for additional details.
Note: The "Int'l" package is coming… Thanks for your patience!

Just released fennel DVDManager v1.5.5! This new version adds a means to "Pretty Format" your DVD library so that titles are morphed from "The Game" to "Game, The" (to get a smarter sorted library). Moreover, v1.5.5 embeds some tiny enhancements and minor bug fixes. Enjoy!

I'm about to download 1.5.5, so you may have fixed this, but one thing i noticed is that when you've got the list sorted by rating, and then you rate another movie, it doesn't move it to keep the list sorted correctly. to do that, you have to sort by something else (Title, for instance) and then click on the rating header again to get it to sort properly with the new rating. Other than that, great program. Any plans to add customizable HTML template?

MaxPower2k3:
First of all, thanks for the feedback; and don't hesitate to send it directly (through our Website, or by using our "File > Provide Feedback" action from fennel DVDManager) for some quicker answer.
Regarding the sorting "bug", we're aware of it. It seems you've found the workaround that make us postpone its correction; but this will be fixed shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience...
At last, HTML templates are definitely coming... but we just can't give you a solid date (it's on our huge "To Do" list !) So, thanks for your patience ('cause we've got very limited resources !)

While the bug fix for the issue recently reported by MaxPower2k3 is not in the loop (yet), we'd like to inform MacNN Forums aficionados that we've just released a new maintenance version of fennel DVDManager. So it's now at v1.5.7.

Fennel, do you have any long term plans to add some way of opening the movie file in DVD player after looking through the list?
So if you have all of your DVD's ripped to the hard drive, you just look through your library in DVDmanager, select the movie, click play and it plays.

iLikebeer, the ability to launch Apple DVD Player to play local images of your personal DVDs from within fennel DVDManager is not something we're currently working on. However, we're not against the idea. So this may be added in a future version of our product. We'll keep you informed of our progress regarding this special topic. Thanks for the feedback.

I absolutely love this app. I have several DVD management programs on my harddrive, but this is the one that I use. I love how it's design (with the green, yellow, and red "status" icons really match the rest of the OS. I have one suggestion, you can take it or leave it. It'd be great to have a quicker way of managing who you lend DVDs too. Maybe a drag and drop type thing like Delicious Library, or a menu when you right click, I dunno. Just a thought!

JazzCatDRP, thanks for your feedback; it's really appreciated. Regarding our "Manage" action, you're right: it could—and will—be improved. However, we've got some more prioritary stuff to deliver in between (like editable genres, w/ completion, retrieval, and so on…) So thanks for your patience !
