I have been using iChat AV for a while and recently ran in to a problem.

Since moving in to my dorm, I have been able to IM people using iChat, but I cannot video or Audio chat with people. I narrowed the problem down to the fact that I am using a wireless router. That is to day, when I plug directly to the ethernet port in to my room, I have no problems.

However, when I plug my router to the ethernet port in my room, no machines (wired or wireless) can use the video/audio chat features of iChat. I figure it has something to do with the way the router works, but I don't know what I am looking for.

To my best knowledge here is how our network looks:

T1 to outside world connects to university. That goes in to a router which gives each dorm room a 192.168.x.x address. When I add my personal wireless router, I am adding a 2nd router. I think that is what is mucking up the iChat in terms of video. I imagine it is some sort of port forwarding or something of the likes, but I'll be darned if I can figure it out. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Peace,

O

Yeah, I'm guessing it's a port blocking issue as well...are those ports blocked at the university level?

I assume they are not blocked at the University level, as it works just fine when I am plugged in via Ethernet to the jack in my room. I assume my Netgear Router is the problem. The thing is, I don't know which ports I need to look at. Does anyone know the default ports for audio and videp on iChat?

if you got a 192.168.x.x on your dorm's ethernet port, you should config your wireless router as a bridge...

I've got my own little ichat issue.

Yesterday at some point, some of my applications were rendering text incorrectly.

Safari was showing slightly gibberish text, essentially showing the wrong characters.

Now Safari is fine but my iChat is buggered. It looks fine when I'm typing but when I send a message it turns in to some garbled mess.

Any thoughts?
