I used to use this great program for my Super Nintendo called MARIO PAINT. My friend and I would make SOUTH PARK like cartoons and we had a great time making stupid little short animated films.

I was actually thinking of picking one up on eBay and making a short animation film with that program, but was wondering if there are any good modern day alternatives to MARIO PAINT.

I know there is flash, but I'm talking about something where it's bascailly just a simply paint program that can maybe animate the eyes or mouth. Someting more powerful than an old video game would be nice, but not something as powerful as flash.

Are there any easy to use animation programs out there for the mac?

Also that got me thinking. I think the next iLife program should one that would allow us to do what I used to do in MARIO PAINT. The animation equiveliant of iMovie.

Call it iPaint for the the aspiring animators or for filmmakers who want to make the next FAMILY GUY pilot.

What do you think?

i think you answered it yourself.

flash it is. flash can be basic, or it can be powerful. it just depends on how you want to use it.

I know little about flash except the name. It is that basic and can be imported into iMovie or FCP? I'll check into it.

I don't know if you could do "animation loops" in Mario Paint. But if you are going for basic flash is great, I use it in conjunction with Freehand (drawing app). You can animate in loops or go frame by frame, it really is a nice program, and Flash 7 doesn't crash nearly as much as Flash 6 did...

I was about to ask. Mario Paint was awesome. I graduated to Photoshop, but Pixen looks pretty awesome for pixel work.

Mario Paint ruled. I've still got my copy somewhere.

That said, it looks like Pixen is probably the best thing going for what you want. It seems to have been written precisely with that kind of art in mind.

thanks for all the advice. right now i'm running 10.2.8 and it looks like PIXEN requires Panther. So I have to wait till I upgrade.

Mario Paint is still cool. I might pick it up anyway just like filmmakers still use the Fisher Price cameras for artistic choices.

Is PIXEN as easy to use as mario paint was. I hope so. It was fun as hell.

thanks everyone.

This might be more limited than you are looking for, but it provides an easy way to create simple animations:

Looks pretty good. Again I'm not a good animater. I'm just looking for a fun program to mess around. My dream would be to make the next family guy off the wall comedy. I love that stuff.

Also I love stick figures. Check out www.bitterfilms.com and get Billy's Balloon or Rejected. I love that guy!

Love to make short films like he does. He wins Oscars.

Awesome. I love it. I think Mario Paint might still be the way to go for me. It will bring out the stupid humor that I so love.
