okay, this seems crazy but I cannot delete objects using Acrobat 6!! I can select the object but I only get the COPY option onder the EDIT menu. The pdf document has no security restrictions. In Acrobat 5 it was trivial, is this function now gone from version 6???

solution found, Acrobat 6 'Standard' cannot do this, object edit available in Acrobat 6 "Professional' only! delta Pro vs Std = ~$130.
