Hey guys,
I'm planning a new app to make, and I just need ideas.
So far, I've come up with this:
Movie Organiser
This would allow you to organise/preview/play all digital movies in formats like mpeg etc. Basically anything you can throw at Quicktime. Its basically, iPhoto for movies. It'd look a lot like iPhoto with a Brushed Metal interface, really nicely done.
Amazon Client
This would be a full Amazon client, allowing you to access your shopping cart, add to it, and generally browse Amazon in a nice, fast interface. I was going to make an eBay client, but the API cost is in the thousands for just a year.
So, feel free to post any ideas, big or small.
Thanks,
Oliver

I don't know if this is up your alley or you'd even consider this fun to code. BUT, I'd like to see a simple piece of software that lets you make bar/chart/line graphs -- including some complex features to plot mulitple item or ranges of data.
I had the need to make a bar graph today and when I started looking around ... all the programs I found were EXPENSIVE. I ended up using the built-in graph maker in AppleWorks but the output/customization options sucked and the results were lame.
Basically, write us something like OmniGraffle with fewer features, ease of use, and FREE.

perhaps you could leave open the possibility to use ffmpeg/libavformat/VLC libs when designing your app (like, don't make it totally dependant on NSMovie). I don't know of any app that offers a good option for combining the flexibility of QT and the flexibility/robustness of the open source options (cellulo has an experimental MPlayer option, but it suffers because that was added afterwards instead of being considered from the beginning). This will not be an easy thing to include I think, but it will be easier to add if you have it in mind during the design stage.

when i first read your idea about the iphoto for movies (i was about to say imovie but then. . .) i thought it was a bad idea and how little use could there would be for it.
then i got to thinking, and i think it is a very cool idea. i have so many short clips (funny movies off the internet), climbing videos, stuff i have recorded with my digital camera. just random short movies, that i probably won't ever put on cd since i won't ever look at them again (out of site out of mind sort of thing). my movies folder has so many sub folders to that i could try categorize these clips, but still i have a hard time finding a specific one. the icons are all really similar, there are no thumbnails.
i think a program like iphoto would need:
fullscreen playback
resizable thumbnails (iphoto like zoom slider would be cool)
albums
things that would be too cool, but not a necessity could be:
ok, i am about to type out what iphoto has.
let me put it this way. you make iphoto that has movies instead of images, and i will buy your software

Agreed. Also good for movies from digital cameras. In that regard, I think it would be great to be able to import movies off digital camera like iPhoto does. I'm sick of opening Image Capture to download movies then file them manually in folders.

Actually, the image capture framework does this for free (images, movies, whatever's on the camera). So iPhoto has to deliberately ignore them. It would be a very easy app for someone to write...

I was thinking of using QuickTime, but it seems lots of people now seem to use DivX XviD etc.
So, I would probably use VLC as the base movie viewer. I think I will go with this app idea, I even have a cool name (don't want to reveal it now, potential thiefs ).
Just needs some more thought behind it. But keep the ideas coming.
Thanks,
Oliver

Your mentioning of ebay reminded me that someone around here was making some sort of ebay app, what happened to that, anyone know?

I'd rather it use Quicktime I think - I have very few movies that _won't_ play in QT... (you can play divx in quicktime player fine!) - and the VLC interface is not worth putting up with unless you need it to view something...

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

I like the Movie organiser idea.
As an alternative, I propose a 'Rendezvouz File Tray' - a little one window utility that lets you share a folder and view+download from available shared folders+contents simply and quickly.
