installing classic apps on new PB

I have a new powerbook (my first OSX machine) I have a 3-year-old G4 with 9.2 on it.
I wanted to move Quark 4.0 and Freehand 9 over from the old machine. I don't know where the install disks are and want to just move the application folders over without fuss.
I moved the folders with the app and its support files over to the Application (9) folder on my new PB, but Quark and Freehand application only show up as "documents" and when I double click on them the computer says it cant recognize them. I know that they should open in the Classic environment, but even whne I prestart Classic they just sit there.
on a separate note...I tried moving over my old fonts and install them in Font Book, but they are not recognikzed. I can't believe I would need all new fonts???
The thing that connects these issues seems to be that in both cases, the font and application show up as "Unix Executable File" with a silly little black screen icon. Fontbook boasts that you just double click the font you want to add anad it opens in Fontbook, but no luck with fonts or classic apps.
Thanks

How did you transfer the apps to your new Mac?
Did it involve copying them onto a MS-DOS formatted disk by any chance?

My mom had this problem for a while. It is how you are trasferring the files, most likely. Somewhere along the line, you are losing your resource forks. Don't transfer by leaving them on a PC server or by putting them on any DOS formatted disc... use a direct file transfer over the network or firewire. If you must put it on a remote server, make sure to compress the files in a format that preserves resource forks.

It was a little sandisk 256mb usb flash drive. I can't seem to get the 2 machines to network with ethernet, without shenanigans.
Come to think of it, when I transfer the drive back and forth between the osx and os9 machines there are some odd files that result, like "trashes" and other dos-like data files.
I have a firewire external ahrdrive, that I could use as a conduit I suppose. If that is the reason, that is kinda weird-and thanks for the tip.
any other reasons for this behaviour??

if both have firewire, why not just use target disk mode? start one up holding "T", and it will act as an external firewire hard drive.
IIRC, with newer macs, you don't need to bother with a router/crossover cable or any of that stuff when trying to just make a two-computer network. I'm not sure how new it has to be, or if both must be that new. Still, I think target disk mode is way easier.
Also, compressing files into a format that preserves resource forks should allow you to transfer files using the flash drive. I THINK .sit preserves them, .bin.hqx does also I believe... I know that .dmg does, but I don't know how to create .dmg in OS 9... .img files might work as well, and they can be created in OS 9, for sure.
alas, not quite as easy as target disk mode

Thanks you guys
I will try either firewire target mode or just transfer my files onto the external firewire hardrive (much is already backuped there already) and then transfer from the external hardrive
I don't really need to have a full time network with the PB and the desktop. I would love to plug my 9.2 desktop into my airport base station and be able to wirelessly network the 2 computers, but it seems like 9.2 prevents that from happening. I can hardwire the two computers with ethernet, but have to jump thru a bunch of hoops with the chooser and it drops my airport internet.

Yep, this is the problem. You're losing the resource forks and the type/creator codes.
I'd just grab the entirety of what you want to move to the other Mac, and compress it with StuffIt on the OS 9 machine. Then you can put it on the flash drive with no problems. FireWire Target Mode is also a good solution. Either way will work fine.

I have started to fix the font problem-I reformated the usb flash drive and it stopped showing all the weird invisible files and it made the fonts show up as actual fonts rather than unix files. I will try the firewire target mode to transfer the larger chunks and the applications...
BUT...Fontbook only seems to open and install fonts that are suitcased. All the single fonts that are not in a family are not being installed. ie: it will import families of fonts, but the specialty fonts that do not have a bold, italic and thin, and are just bare postscript fonts are left out in the cold.
plus, is there an easier way than to double click each font suitcase, wait for FontBook to preview it and then hit "install" I miss the days of dragging 20 fotns into the fonts folder and restarting the application and voila!!

you can still drag them in. ~/Library/Fonts (this folder might have to be created)
(if you are new to OS X, you may not know this: ~ refers to /Users/yourusername)
These fonts can only be used by your user. Handy if you have a lot of fancy fonts for one reason or another, but another user on the system only needs the standard ones.
you can also move them to /Library/Fonts
These can be used by all users.
Finally, they can be put in the old font location inside the system folder! these can be used by all users AND by OS 9 (through boot and firewire), IIRC.

Thanks...I tried dragging the fonts into the osx library/fonts but they did not show up. I also dragged them into the classic system/fonts folder. They did not show up in either classic or panther apps. I had to use Fontbook to "install" them. BUT was not able to get Fontbook to open or instal fonts that are "singles" and not in a suitcase.
Any ideas about the suitcase problem?
