Many songs in my library are duplicated across albums. For example a song that is in an artist's Best Of collection is also included in one of the albums. I'd like to be able to alias these so that it saves on file space and also the play counts are accurate, I dislike having a track I've listened to say 10 times but it only shows 5 for each.

I'm aware this would cause significant problems with the ID3 tag but perhaps a mapping would be possible without affecting the ID3 tag. Perhaps even if duplicates were kept but the attributes such as play count were linked.

Anyone know if this is possible or have opinions if this would be a decent feature to suggest for future iTunes versions?

I've thought of this too. I agree it would be a nice feature. I don't know if there is a way to trick iTunes into doing that now.
