I'd like to be able to play every type of video file (.mov, .avi, .wmv, .mpg, etc.) in a browser window and not have to download the file first or launch another application.

Is there any combination of application and plugin under OS X that makes this possible?

QuickTime-> Plays .mov, .mpeg, and some .avi. Plays all .avi if you install this QuickTime component: http://www.3ivx.com/download/index.html

Real Player (click "Free Player" at top right)-> Plays Real movies

Windows Media Player-> Plays .wmv (or not)

Browser still insists on opening up WMV files in Windows Media Player, not in a browser window.

The browser doesn't insist on that. The WMP plug-in does for directly linked WMV files. It only plays them in the browser when embedded in a web site.

Ooooh. I see. Too bad, because that's not the case with Quicktime .mov files or with .mpg files. Makes sense, though.
