Any recommendations for optimizer? thanks

The only optimizer currently available for OS X is TechTool Pro. Unfortunately, it's very slow. The good news is that with 10.3 and higher, if you have journaling turned on, it does some optimizing automatically for you under the hood, so an optimizer should not really be necessary unless you routinely deal with extremely large files.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Thanks Charles, couple questions

How slow? I used to do the discwarrior overnight, on 80gb internal drive.

How do you check see if journaling is on?

The cd for tech tool pro 4 does not work with G5, is it better order new cd, or just do the e drive thing? Know procedure for that?

I think it's always good to optimize every few months no?

What happened with Symantec? No more anti virus or disk doctor?

On the Mac, it's not really necessary to optimize very often. Many say that it isn't necessary to optimize at all. This is true to some extent, since Panther does some degree of optimization automatically.

How slow is TTP? Really slow. Slow enough that if you run it overnight, it might be done in the morning... or it might not.

DiskWarrior, on the other hand, is still essential for drive repair. The latest version of it works fine with OS X and is great preventive maintenance for keeping your drive error-free. Unlike the other utilities, DiskWarrior works fine with the journaling on, and even works better that way. I would definitely upgrade to version 3 if you haven't already. I wouldn't use anything else for disk repair at all, except perhaps for Disk Utility and fsck. Too bad DiskWarrior doesn't have a defragger bundled with it anymore...
