Hey all

Have recently bought a Minolta A2 digi camera.

iPhoto imports perfectly when my i have taken pics in highest jpeg setting.

But if i take pics in RAW format it wont have it.

Is there any way it will? or should i just open in Photoshop, make any adjustments, save in a folder as a jpeg and then import them?

Cheers for any help

the RAW format requires an "interpreter" to open, and iPhoto does not have the necessary smarts. Your only choice is to use a.) the software that came with your camera or b.) Photoshop CS to process the RAW file and save a TIFF or JPEG out.

iPhoto has no love for the RAW format.

I gave up on it because of this limitation, and more importantly because it wants to grab all my photos and put them in a central location.

I use iView Media Pro, though it's fairly expensive. Their "cheaper" version, iView Media, may fit the bill if you really want to catalog RAW files.

May as well post in this thread:

iPhoto 5 was, to me, the most exciting part of Stevenote '05 because it can handle RAW files. I love iPhoto for organizing and quick editing, but I really preferred to use the RAW mode on my Canon digicam, since it's a lossless format. I hated having to choose between easy organization on one hand and higher-quality, more tweakable image on the other.

assuming its RAW features work smoothly, iPhoto 5 should let me have my cake and eat it. I'm surprised Derrick Story hasn't been (uh, virtually) jumping up and down over at MacDevCenter yet. And that this hasn't been discussed more here.

If I don't run out and buy me one o' them cheapo Macs, I'm going to buy iLife '05. Rock.

y.

Yeah, I'm certainly going to consider it, as well. I noted during the keynote that when he made the changes and switched screens, it kept saying "saving..." I wonder what format it was saving in (Steve said he was working with RAW files). Typically it would be VERY bad form to actually save over a RAW file (probably it shouldn't be possible). So I wonder if iPhoto was saving in DNG or would save back as the original format in a new location (I guess by default iPhoto doesn't save over originals anyway).

I'd also like to be able to maintain the file/folder hierarchy myself. Digging through it is a mess. Though Spotlight may help with that :-)
