The company I work for decided out of nowhere that iChat is a security risk so they blocked the service. Does anyone know if there is a way around this cause a few of us here rely on iChat for internal communication.

Thanks.

Hmm, as long as you are in the same building, you could always try using Rendezvous through iChat...

Better yet, ask your company why iChat is a security issue.

My company are very restrictive with regards to what you can do on the internet - but I can still iChat. If your company is so security conscious, then they probably use a Web proxy for web browsing - the good news is that you can use the very same proxy for iChat !

Have a look in iChat's preferences, and you will see the setting for a Proxy configuration (Accounts -> Server configuration). Just select the 'Connect Using Proxy' and the 'Use System Preferences' boxes and you should be up and running.

Remember, it's not your network... and if this could get you in trouble, it's not worth it.

It's simple to see who is using a chat client... I would simply bitch first.

Thanks for the advice but that doesnt work. They must be blocking the 5190 port. This is pissing me off!

Thanks again.

Try the Rendezvous messaging? Sign onto Rendezvous from the account preferences I believe...

Try port 80 for the AIM server. AOL's server listens on all kinds of ports (or at least they used to. I have kind of given up on iChat recently because it won't reconnect automatically after I get disconnected).

Another port to try would be 23. For the trivia interested, it's the port for telnet.

My daughter is running into a similar problem trying to chat with a friend of hers (they are both at different Universities). Using iChat, my daughter and I are able to video chat without any problems (we both have macs). My wife and I can also video chat with her friend (who is on a PC running the latest version of AIM), but she and my daughter can not get the video chat to work.

I suggested to my daughter that she select the 'Connect Using Proxy' in her iChat preferences, but she said that it was grayed out. Any other suggestions?

If you have access to the Web through a browser you can use AIM Express.
