I've been having a bit of a problem with typing...many times, when lots of programs are open (but nothing is hogging too much memory, and the computer is working just fine, and even fast), my typing starts to lag severely. Each key will take about half a second to register, so the text is always trailing my thoughts, rather than staying on par with them. After a few minutes, it goes away. It's quite annoying, though. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I know that it involves Safari, but I'm not sure what else...or if it's systemwide.

Another issue I've been having is that some websites scroll very slowly and unsmoothly in Safari, for me. Take [url=http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/], for instance. When scrolling through the list of software, the scrolling seems a bit laggy (and extremely laggy right when the page loads). I've had similar issues in Linux, but never in Windows. It doesn't make it unusable, but occasionally it gets a second behind, and normally it's just...ugly and hard to read. The scrollbar just jumps from part to part. In other pages, while I'm not using smooth scrolling, it's going through little bits at a time, but something about lists like that make it all jumpy, very unsmooth, hard to read, etc. Any suggestions?

What do you mean?

Blah. My Mac is 1.5 GHz, but it loads some pages in Safari like it's 1.5 MHz.

Safari can have a really hard time with animation (specifically animated gifs in this instance).

The smilies are the likely culprit here, and version tracker (which I just went to) has animated gif ads.

if you want smooth scrolling and wicked fast websurfing you have to get a PC or something like a G5-3mHz. OS-X and Safari have too many hickups and slowdowns, as you experienced.

it's the truth, i do like apple but this has to be said.

thanks.

Wow. A G5 running at a whole three millihertz! Careful - I don't think you can handle that much raw CPU power.

However, Safari in its current builds have some speed issues when multiple animated GIFs are on-screen. Gecko-based browsers like Firefox and Camino seem to be less affected by animated GIFs.

While I've not seen it personally, I've read rumors that the next version of Safari will improve on this.

Edit - dual processor machines are far less affected, BTW. On my DP G5, is practically unnoticeable.

Edit 2 - BTW, I don't notice any scrolling issues on VersionTracker, even on my 1.33GHz PBG4. I do get the slowed typing response rate, such as when typing a message on this BBS (but, oddly, not always). Like right now - no slowed character response at all (even with all the smilies visible.

I have 512 MB of RAM...do you have more on your PB?

Safari hates animated GIFs. It is going to be really slow when more than one is on the screen.

Try Firefox. No problems there.
