I have recently changed my isp and acquired a new pop account with them

I seem unable to send mail thru the pop account, a dialogue box retorts

"that the server cannot contact the mail server on port 25". This is

odd because according to my isp their mail server uses port 25. I can

access my email via the web and thus are using it to send my messages

although I am able to view the replies in the pop account. Thus their

server works to my mail account ?

Any clues ?

Isn't the sending server generally port 110?

no. that's the unencrypted pop port. sending is via smtp, port 25 if unencrypted. this clearly seems an issue with the original poster's isp, so he should contact them. i doubt any advice here could solve his isp's problems...

I've had the same issue a few days ago, here's what did it for me :
Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Server outgoing mail : first set the right one or create a new according to isp instructions, next > Options > Identity control : None.

I posted on a similar issue several days back as well. Seems that some ISPs are intentionally blocking access to all outgoing mail servers but their own (reasons to be discussed elsewhere). If G. Vanoppen's advice doesn't work for you, try simply changing your POP's outgoing mail server to use your ISPs outgoing mail server (from the outgoing mail server dropdown in "Accounts"). Emails from you pop account will still show as being from that account when you send it, it just gets routed by your ISPs mail server.

Solved the issue for me a few months back when my ISP decided to start doing that.

Crap, I misread the whole question. Anyhow as previously stated, it could be that your ISP is blocking port 25, which only allows you to send using their SMTP server. Basically this is to prevent spammers and viruses from abusing the connection. Sucks, but it seems everyone is cracking down these days.

try this:
http://www.macgeekery.com/node/25

Probably your ISP blocking port 25 - which is fine - because port 25 is for unauthenticated SMTP relaying.

You should be using authenticated SMTP over port 587 (I think that's the port) - but alas most email providers still seem to use port 25 (even when using smtp-auth)

[edit]

re-read the question a bit more carefully - it seems odd that the ISP is blocking port 25 to its own smtp server.

Are you sure you have the right address for the smtp server (it's not always the same as the pop server - pop is for you collecting mail - smtp is for outgoing mail.)

Who is your ISP? linky?

Actually no, it's the other way around. Any sane ISP block connections to its SMTP server from IP addresses not on its network. So the problem is that his old ISP won't let him use their SMTP server since they can't verify who he is (if you are on their network, they can probably link your IP to your account and deal with you appropriately if you abuse it ).

As others have said, you'll need to use your new ISP's SMTP server, or possibly you might be able to use authentication with your old ISP's SMTP server. Either way you need to change your configuration details after finding out what the correct settings are for your current situation.

Well thanks everybody, but I still got no joy.

Tried changing everything a couple of times, I'm just begining to wonder if there is a list somewhere of all the possible SMTP Ports and what they are used for ?

My isp is called aussiedial, they are essentially a pc isp, but on talking to them over this problem they have said that they have a few other OSX users and don't seem to have any probs. Aussiedial facilitites via Linux Servers, but they keep on saying that Port 25 is the Port that they use. They don't seem to be employing any blocks on that Port.

I think that I will try some other email clients.

Any suggestions anybody ? It would have to be freeware.

ok - your isp's web site is shocking:

http://aussiedial.com.au/

No support details apart from a "contact us" link.

What is the address of the outgoing mailserver?

Bergy gave me a link to Apple support page which is for Mail 1.3.3. I have version 1.2.5 probably because I use Jaguar, but would that make any difference.

Sure the Aussiedial site isn't the best, but I imagine this could be attributed to the reasonably cheap rates for my telephone/internet package, anyway my actual mail server is the parent company www.goanna.net.au which has a reasonably slicker site, but details are sketchy here to. Aussiedial or Goanna were at pains to point out when I joined them that they didn't offer Mac support, but assured me that I shouldn't have any problems.

I am begining to think that my former mail server Netspace might have given me the problem in the first place. When I made them aware that I wasn't going to pay another $30 for email redirection, I seem to have lost the abilty to send mail from either account, thats about a week before the money was due. I definiely didn't want to continue with the account from Netspace since the junk mail I was receiving was getting worse and worse as the deadline for the $30 was due. I can only hope that this specultion doesn't quantify my present dilemna !

I'd like to that Terminal thing except that that app makes me to nervous to use. but perhaps I should give it a go.

Right - mail.goanna.net.au seems to be up and running - is this the address of the outgoing mail server that you are using?

from that it looks like your mail server requires authentication. so go to Mail.app -> Preferences -> Accounts -> Account Information -> Server Settings (at the bottom). as the panel says only your system admin knows exactly what goes here, but starting with Password with your mail server username and password (the same as you use for the pop or imap settings above) is a good place to start.
