Does anyone know what the EyeTV helper application is for? [it's the one that automatically gets put in your startup items when you install EyeTV]

what exactly is this program used for?

Curious because I don't see how this program needs something like this.

I'm not sure, but my guess has always been that it's for when you have a timed recording. So, even if EyeTV isn't currently running, the helper app will launch it so that your program will get recorded.

You might want to try disabling it from the Startup Items and scheduling a timed recording and see if it works. Then try again with it enabled.

Just a thought.

Nope, if EyeTV isn't running, your show isn't recorded. I think the helper app assists in waking or starting up the Mac by communicating to the OS prior to each sleep or shutdown the next time the Mac needs to wake or startup.

Probably what Gordy said, to be sure though go into the general preferences, the general tab, and uncheck start eye-tv when device is plugged in. if that box is checked then eye-tv can not only wake up but it can turn on your mac. if its not checked it can't and we can narrow down what the helper app does. alternatively go to the activity monitor and see what files it has open.
