I have a DVD full of NEF files (Nikon's propietery RAW image file) that I need to change into a format that I can edit in photoshop. Nikon wants to charge me some crazy amount of money for Nikon Capture (which is interesting because the package doesn't come with a Nikon digital SLR either), and I've found two other apps that will convert the images: qimage and bibble. unfortunately, they're for windows.
iphoto will open the files, but they seem to be converted to a tiff file that's only 160px X 120 px. not useful.
can anyone here point me towards an os x application that will convert these NEFs into full size jpgs, tiffs, or something similar?

Looks like GraphicConverter will open 'Nikon D1 NEF' files. Not tried it, but presumably you could use it to convert to JPEGs, TIFFs, etc.

Photoshop CS ships with a free raw image convertor called Camera Raw - see http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html. This is as good as the Nikon Capture editor. However, Nikon's free Nikon View software also includes a basic RAW convertor plugin for Photoshop. It doesn't offer the fine control over editing but is perfectly acceptable - see http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin...MQ**&p_li=
