Hello, I am not a mac user, although im sorry to say my roomate uses I-tunes. We share files on our network, but all the I-tunes files are m4p format, and will not play on Windows Media Player. I was wondering if there is a codec of some sort so I can play them with WMP, or WinAmp. I like having all of my video and audio files to run on a single player, and the only players I am willing to use are WMP, or winamp.... Can anyone help me with this?

.m4p is protected AAC file format, commonly used in the iTunes music store. You can probably find a way to deauthorize these files but the forums don't allow talk of piracy. So in short, no dice with the 'tunes.

I am not suggesting piracy. I have I tunes on my system, and itunes allows you to have up to 5 computers under 1 account....I just don't like the i-tunes player.... and I was trying to find a simple way to get it to play on WMP or Winamp. Either a codec, or better format such as Mp3...

Sorry, off topic, but why don't you like iTunes?

Your rudeness is not appreciated here.

Recent versons of WinAmp can play AAC audio out of the box. However, if he files he's using are protected (meaning he got them from the iTunes Music Store) then you're screwed; even iTunes on your machine won't help you. Get your music legitimately next time.

What's your beef with iTunes anyway? Honest question.

my rudeness is not appreciated here? I didn't know I was being rude...I was just looking for an answer...

As far as i-tunes, I just don't agree with the ways that companies are going about selling online music. My feeling(along with many others) is for a monthly rate program,IE $20 a month, unlimited downloads etc. not a pay per song. That and I feel that if I am pay $1 or what not per song, I should have the ability to choose what format I want to download it on. i-tunes is great for the average mac/ipod user, but there formats don't work on many MP3 players. I have nothing against macs, or their users, I just don't like i-tunes. Further more, my roomate has it, and if he downloads music, yes, I can legaly listen to it on the network, i-tunes allows 1 account to be used on up to 5 computers...so if he downloads a song, I listen to it on my computer with i-tunes player, and I am not breaking any laws/rules/copyrights/etc. I was just wondering if I could use there m4p format with my choosen players...I don't feel that is rude, or that it's a huge request.... and I did google search it with no luck, thats why I came to the forum to inlist the help of actual mac users. I am sorry if I came accrost rude, or if you do not agree with my ideals, I was just asking for help, and thats what I got, so thank you.

I don't think there's a way to do what you want to do. The only option here, really, is for your roommate to burn the legally purchased music to a CD (which he is allowed to do for a limited number of identical discs) and give it to you. At that point, you can do with it what you will within the law. There will be degradation from the burning and ripping, but that's the only way, other than simply listening to all of this in iTunes, for you to listen to the files.

I'm with everyone else, though, regarding your dislike of iTunes, although I can certainly understand your desire to keep everything in one player.

As for the rudeness and the responses you've gotten...I suspect it has something to do with having said this: "although im sorry to say my roomate uses I-tunes."

Anyway. Hope this helps. Like everyone else here, I'd just suggest you use iTunes on your PC. It really is a phenomenal program.

Cheers
Scott

That would be nothing. He is legally allowed to burn the songs he downloads to CD, but he is not allowed to give those CDs to anyone. That is where the line between fair use and piracy is crossed.

Seriously?? I had no idea that was the case! I didn't mean to advocate piracy in my comments above and apologize profusely for having done so.
