I'm experiencing a weird issue with Mail.app and I'm wondering if it's really a bug in Mail or if it has something to do with my SMTP server (which I doubt).

In Mail's 'Accounts' preference there is field 'Full Name'. Depending on the form I enter my name in that field Mail sends email with a correct 'From' statement or not.

• If I enter 'George Bush', Mail will send emails with 'George Bush' in the 'From' field.
• If I enter 'George W. Bush', Mail will send emails with 'George W.Bush' in the 'From' field
• If I enter 'George Walker Bush', Mail will send emails with 'George Walker Bush' in the 'From' field

So, if you enter a middle initial only, it seems Mail drops the space between the period and the last name. I can verify this by sending myself email to another account and comparing the raw source of the sent and received email.

Is this a bug in Mail.app or is something fishy going on in between (my SMTP server)?

don't experience that bug. All my mail properly shows us as being from Ciaran P. A. Connelly - so maybe it's a problem/bug with your service provider?
