This new version is unbelievable software, folks. I've been using Painter since version 2.0, and I thought 5.5 was the cream of the crop (even though I used 7 and 8 often enough since I migrated out of Classic to OS X a few years ago...) but this is hands down the best thing my Wacom tablet and I have ever experienced together. I had the demo (about to expire, too), but now that I have all the extras and the manual, it really shines. I think they put alot of effort into this based on user feedback.

DHL dropped off my upgrade package off a few minutes ago. The free notebook (from the promo) was a bit smaller than I thought, but it was a nice touch. All the little touches to the program's packaging and icons were a bit tentatively agreeable to me, but now I love them: the 9 fingered hand and scribble motif are very cool. And yes, the brush response is faster! I can't believe this is a Corel product (v.8 yes, that was a Corel product...) but this is more like Fractal and Metacreations' original agenda. Now I wish I had the new version of wacom's intuos pad to go with it!

The box opens up in a neat way, kind of like the iPod packaging, or a book. It's got a very cool design school notebook pen doodling thing happening on the inside. The manual is very sturdy and larger than previously. It has a great tutorial section: very inspiring. All in all, 9 out of 10.

I'm still going through all the brushes, but for the most part I like everything just fine. I think the watercolor layers and all the watercolor brush options are still difficult from an intuitive perspective because they have gotten more complicated, but there's no dismissing all the tangents they've tried to rope together.

When I bought Painter a few years ago it came in a paint can . That was the only "different" kind of packaging available back then. I wish I had it for OS X.
