Well, after installing the service pack for Office 2004 for Mac, I suddenly can no longer HotSync, even after reinstalling the Palm Desktop package, disabling the appropriate conduits, and reinstalling Handheld Sync. I'm dismayed. What the heck do I do now?

I may, but meanwhile I'd prefer to figure out how to make this work.

That's really odd. Does Office 2004 come in a standard .pkg installer? Barring that, does its installer give you any kind of install log so you can figure out what went where?

Yeah, there's no mention of Entourage, Palm Desktop, or Handheld Sync in the log.

Did it install anything in /Library or /System/Library/Extensions? If so, what was it?

Well, I was able to solve my HotSync issue and it turns out it wasn't Entourage or Office SP1 that was to blame, but a static buildup in the Palm itself. Opening the back of my Palm m515, disconnect the battery for five minutes, reconnecting the battery, and putting the back plate on again solved my problem.
Apologies to Bill Gates: this time, it wasn't your fault!

Glad to hear you're on to HotSync again.
I won't ask just how you got the idea to open the m515 - I wouldn't even know how to accomplish that.
But what were you doing to build up the static ? Rubbing it for like 20 minutes or so
Thanks for sharing, the rest of us can "safely" run the SP1, right mr Gates ?

If you had searched , you would have read the other thread on the upgrade and how it's hit some people's syncing. There's also links and possible solutions to the issue on the other thread.

Sheesh, how do you know I didn't? That said, I conceded I was the victim of my own erroneous assumption that it was a software rather than a hardware issue.

Thanks. I'm much relieved.

I read an article on palminfocenter.com following a Google search. It was quite easy. A Torx-5 screwdriver removes the four screws. Some gentle prying with a small flathead screwdriver pries off the rear plate. You can then gently disconnect the battery and wait five minutes before reconnecting it and replacing the rear plate. That's it.

Honestly, I have no idea. Maybe I was carrying the Palm in the pocket of my corduroys? No snickering please; they're comfortable and it gets chilly in Maine this time of year.

selowitch, I sure am pleased that you posted the "solution." I never would have divined the fix. Thanks for closing the loop.
