With all the discussions about defragmenting your HD or not and what benefits (if in deed any) it may offer, What do you prefer to use and why?

I definately prefer TechTool Pro, simply because of the extensive options it offers... not to mention the S.M.A.R.T technology it uses to protect my beloved PowerBook's HD

DiskWarrior. Simply the best of the bunch.

No need to use such software for defragmenting.

If for some reason your HD blows a gasket, DiskWarrior is the best choice. But 0 need to use it on a regular basis, for any kind of "preventive maintenance." It's just not necessary, nor is it a good idea, to run any of these utilities on a regular basis "to keep your system running smoothly."

Mac users like Voodoo -- because they don't understand how things work. Repair permissions is also Voodoo -- very rarely necessary and it CANNOT fix anything to do with your home folder.

With regards to defragmenting your HD here's an Apple Knowledge Base artical about why it isn't necessary.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25668

IMO the whole idea is just a carry over from paranoid windows users

Well the Knowledge Base article says there is "little benefit" to defragmenting, not "no benefit." It also says that for a HD that is almost full it may be more beneficial, and they recommend using a 3rd-party utility. So while the importance placed on it is a carryover from older Windows days, the need for it hasn't been completely eliminated. It's just not as necessary as in the past. That said, I have TechToolsPro, and have only defragmented my PowerBook once (which I'm sure didn't need it, but I was doing some major housecleaning and felt like being thorough).
