iTunes "unexpectedly quits"???

Suddenly, my iTunes is crashing with the "unexpectedly quit" message when playing a bunch of music I just acquired from a friend.

What is wierd is iTunes plays fine on all my own stuff. Have tried every troubleshooting idea, including Cocktail, deleting the plist file for iTunes, reinstalling the 10.3.5 update, resetting the PRAM, etc. iTunes will play a few songs, then quit.

Also, interestingly, my iPod will crash (with the Apple logo on the screen) when playing some of this music. My new iPod has never crashed before.

This is music that was ripped on a new iMac G5 and then copied to my Powerbook. Most of it is AAC and only some is MP3.

Anybody else have this problem?

Try removing the "acquired" music and see if the crashes continue. If they don't, some bug in the encoding process probably happened. If possible, try re-ripping the music and seeing if that works.
Can also try repairing permissions and if you have DiskWarrior, run it on the iPod and your hard drive. If not, try Disk Utility to verify the iPod and repair any problems it's giving.
You could also try editing the tracks and seeing what encoding bugs it might have that's causing your system the problems.
And just in case, if it's acquired off the Web, it might just be buggy.

Ok. I will try these tips. But I am a little hesitant about running Disk Utility on the iPod. Are there really any permissions on an iPod, since there is no OS X on it? I was under the impression that the only software utility you want to run on an iPod is the Apple Updaters for the iPod.

We are going to try an experiment where he plays the same songs on his iMac that I do on my Powerbook to see if it something on just my machine. All of the music was ripped from CDs. This friend of mine has an insane collection of music from purchases and libraries that allow checkout of CDs.

Thanks for the quick response!

I've found the iPod to work better after repairing it. It is a hard drive, after all.
