On my Boss' machines, he's had two HDs become corrupted. On both, the corruption occurs exactly where/when Mail saves the index of his mail directory. He has over 1000 mail messages in his mail box.

I've taken the HDs out and reformatted them with low-level format, and tested them with Norton. No bad blocks, everything's fine. But after a while they start making scratching noises again when it starts to save the index.

Anyone know of a known bug with Mail that might cause this? One of the HDs is brand new. It could be coincidence, but I find that hard to believe.

I have never heard of Mail corrupting a hard disk. It would be pretty surprising to me if it did, since I'm sure it uses the standard file-writing functions just like any normal application. It's not as though Mail does anything fancy with files.

I have had this problem also. Interestingly, also on my BOSS's computer. His is an iBook G3 700. It whacked the HD once and once I think I intervened before it got his HD by moving his INBOX onto the Desktop and then importing his mail back into his account.

His machine has been the most problematic of our Macs but then again his last machine had more problems than anyone elses' too. You could always try installing BOSS Ver4.5.2, but don't expect miracles, they're all corrupt and buggy ;-)

Good luck,

CH
