A search of these forums turns up nothing on "Authentium", but MacNN is mentioning their release: http://macnn.com/rd.php?id=24534
Anyone familiar with this company's reputation? Particularly regarding Mac software?
Also, if any brave soul launches into using this software, any comments here would be appreciated. (It might be nice for Norton to have some real competition in the Mac market.)

Their "latest news" ticker dates back to late August.

I still say it's fishy that a new company crops up right about the time there's talk of some security problem. While I know no system is completely safe, I have to wonder how much involvement these companies have in spreading the word, then spreading the cure.

Yes, and it consists of people who realize two things:
1) We're better, but we're not invincible. The day that a true Mac virus appears will arrive, and we had best be ready for it.
2) We can still carry viruses that we can't outright catch.
In other words, people who care about security. I'm interested in the Open-Source ClamAV system myself. The current OSX frontend. ClamXAV, is quite rough, but it's a good start.

Agreed.
With the attitudes I've seen when it comes to Macs and anti-virus software, it's no wonder that there are people out there who view Mac users as arrogant and cocky (despite the obvious fact that not everyone is)... I know of people who actually found it amusing (and justified) when many sites were reporting on the 'Opener' malware (I noticed that many Mac users dismissed that as nothing - it still IS a risk, as far as I'm concerned). And you know, I'd have to say I agree with those folks, too - it's going to take something that's destructive, and a big risk to security like that, to make people wake up and learn that no OS is invincible, no matter how much they kid themselves about it.
In other words, people who care about security. I'm interested in the Open-Source ClamAV system myself. The current OSX frontend. ClamXAV, is quite rough, but it's a good start.
I have a question, though, since you mention ClamAV and an OS X front-end for it - is it a viable alternative to purchasing a consumer-targetted Mac AV app, such as Intego's VirusBarrier X? (I ask because I can get VBX fairly cheap with an edu discount, but if Clam is a good alternative, I'll go with that instead.)

As of now, this OS is pretty much invincible. It's invincible because there's nothing to attack it with.
Maybe one day there will be a real threat to Macs (and no, that legless cripple of a shell script Opener doesn't qualify). When that happens, antivirus software won't do you any good, because none of it is designed to sniff out Mac OS X viruses — because there aren't any. Everybody — both previous purchasers of AV software and not — will have an equal need to fortify their computers.
