Looks like they will have a version for Windows. I wonder if there will be any new features for Mac?

With the controversy over Apple's Dashboard vs. Konfabulator, I'm not surprised at all that they're developing a Windows version.
There is a lot of competition for such utilities on Windows, but the polish of Konfabulator will help on Windows. I, for one, look forward to seeing this. I do have to use a PC at times...

They need a Windows version. Despite having a different approach, Dashboard will grab 80% of their existing user base, and limit the number of new users ("Konfab? What's that? Oh like dashboard on my desktop. $20 no thanks")
Meanwhile the number of useful Dashboard widgets is increasing daily, and Tiger isn't even out yet!

You get that same widget from kon and it's one of the few to be released in weeks. That place is so slow, cobwebs are forming.

Hey, you never know when you're going to need that! Personally, I will feel far safer with a dashboard widget to inform me of America's current security threat.

Good for them, stick it to Apple and show them what happens when they basically put a Mac-only developer out of business.

I agree with Horse Poo! 100%.
For those that want to start this flame war again, i suggest searching the archives. Many good points were made. Including as Horsepoo said., Arlos should have built an IDE from the start and acted in a much better manner when Dashboard was announced.

What, you don't think Konfabulator can stand up to a little competition? They have a lot going for them that Dashboard won't.

I've been looking at Dashboard and Konfab widgets, and already I can see a few I'd use in Dashboard, can't say the same for Konfab. Although all i probably would do is have a calculator (still very much lacking in konfab), a game (i.e. tetris) and calendar.

There is a superb Tetris for Konfabulator, cool Calendars (as well as one built-in), and of course calculators. So, again, said something about "can't say the same for Konfab"?
Flaming Konfabulator is like a sport in these forums, for sure

It's not flaming Konfabulator. It's the concept behind it that many doesn't convince. There are games, calendars and calculators without Konfabulator and Dashboard as well. Having them in an additional layer above or below regular application isn't a compelling feature for many people.

No wonder there's been a dearth of widgets since shortly after 1.7 was released. It's migrating to Windows.
Well, no matter which side you take, the way the response was handled when Dashboard was introduced was amateurish. And the meager trickle of widgets since hasn't done much for the rep over there.
My take: Arlo felt as if Apple screwed him over, so he's screwing over those who have bought and supported Konfabulator so they can port a Windows version and try making a few bucks because the Mac well is going to go dry very soon.
And I realize that that may not be the case, but it is the perception.

Actually, I thought it was genius, largely because Apple's whole Tiger campaign was amateurish to start off with.

Monkeybrain was claiming that Konfabulator is worse than Dashboard because it doesn't have certain widgets — even though it in fact does. Nowhere did he bring up the uselessness of widgets/gadgets in general. I agree they're about as useful as a third nipple, but wasn't the topic under discussion.

I wasn't flaming Konfabulator. How's an app supposed to evolve if we cannot critically discuss it? I've tried Konfabulator out a few times, including when first released, but have simply never been compelled to keep it on my system. I've also found it to use quite a bit of CPU, although I suppose this could be the widgets and not Konfabulator itself.
I think I may prefer how Dashboard displays its widgets - it's tidier. Of course it's pretty bad UI design, is it possible to drag and drop with the widgets? for example.
Thanks for the link to the Tetris widget, I may check that out. In my defence, that doesn't show up when you do a search on the Konfabulator website. I've tried that calculator, but as I said, it is lacking somewhat both in design and also the way it interacts with the Konsposé feature (sometimes appears at the wrong level). I should have been clearer about this.

Yup. Dashboard widgets support drag and drop. For example, one of the widgets I'm in the process of making allows you to drag files onto it and it'll upload them to an FTP server...

That's pretty cool, so I guess this has to be done using exposé? Or do you start dragging, press your Dashboard button, and then you can continue to drag the file?

Yup. Drag the file, press f12 to see the dashboard layer and drop whatever file(s) you are dragging onto the widget you want.

That whole journal thing is really lame. Very tedious to read.
I've used Konfab a bit, but I'm looking forwards to Dashboard, and will probably just use it instead once Tiger's out.

So how has apple been hurt here? They are making the OS better and now they have control of the concept rather than some third party. What if the Konfabulator dude decided to just call it quits one day? Face it. It belongs in the OS, and is not a new idea.

I wouldn't say developing this was stupid, as there is obviously a nitch for it. What's stupid is acting suprised when it gets put in the OS.

So who would be justified in being surprised when Apple decides to release a functionally identical product for free as part of the OS?
By the way, in U.S. English, I believe "nitch" is the preferred pronunciation, though still not the preferred spelling.

People really say nitch? I know you Americans like to change our language (color, ) but changing the french ones as well? That's asking for trouble I think. Sorry, just nitch sounds so very funny. Like someone trying to say niché that has never heard the word before.
Ok back to the topic now...

Yeah, well the trouble with the French is they have no word for 'entrepreneur', it's too much of a nitch area for them.
Quick English lesson: flavo ur, alumin ium, defen ce, che que and critici se.
As they say: we gave you a language, kindly use it.
Anywho, I can see why the Konfabulator team are looking towards new and potentially more lucrative markets, though it remains to be seen how well they'll do.
Personally, I always found Konfab a bit of a CPU drain - but then a lot of things are a drain when you're running a G3 these days.

The watson team, from what I remember. Perhaps adobe if apple broke out something that trounced photoshop.
Konfabulator really sucks as is. Once again, not 100% sure about this, but did the konfabulator widgets do the expose hide / show effect before dashboard? When I used it, it did not. And that made it a waste of time. That and I wasn't impressed by any of the widgets.

I guess it would have been nice to see the Konfabulator team somehow financially rewarded for what they did, even if the code wasn't used in dashboard. Then they would continue mac development, and they are obviously talented, even though, as I already mentioned, I didn't like Konfabulator.
They might be he, I dont know. How many people coded it?

Konfab and Dashboard are two very different platforms. Konfab is a great way to embed information into your desktop. Dashboard on the other hand is great for all those little utilities that you want at your fingertips in a moments notice, but don't need around all the time.
Both products can coexist and do just fine...
I do not believe Dashboard draws enough cues from Konfabulator for Apple to owe them anything at all. This is the real world. Sometimes two products compete, and that's okay! When there is competition, both developers are encouraged to beat the other one, and that's when you see some really great products emerge...

Exactly! The people at Konfanb should have looked for ways to integrate Konfab with Dashboard, or seperate it enough so it stands on its own merits. Instead, the silly diary thing and going to Windows.

The hide/show effect was added a week or two after Apple showed Dashboard. I think it was the Konfab team's way of saying "Haha, Apple, you stole our idea, now we're stealing yours." I thought the immaturity would stop there, but it seems that Arlo and the boys are taking it a step further and saying "Haha, Apple, now we're porting Konfab to PC."
I can't wait until they're saying "Dang, we're out of business because both Tiger and Longhorn have a 'widgets' system built into the OS and nobody is using Konfab."

Well, being a Konfabulator user since 1.0 and visiting their forums since then (and before), both "Konsposé" and a port to Windows were big requests, coming frequently at their forums.
I guess the Dashboard team also visit the Konfab forums to get ideas
Also they are not stopping development on Mac. And I don't see why a Windows port is a bad thing, I can remember a popular music jukebox being ported over there
Anyway, keep the flaming, I'm starting to enjoy it.
