I'm looking at various options for videoconferencing between my Mac and my family's PCs.

Has anyone tested sightspeed ( www.sightspeed.com ) ?

I'm looking for something which necessitates very little firewall configuration.

Thanks!

This may be stating the obvious, but why not iChat + AIM? (iChat for Mac, AIM for Windows). Works very well cross platform for video.

Mainly for configuration reasons. My family has difficulty configuring its ADSL modem/router with AIM. Is there anything simpler?

Not to say I have tested everything out there, but in my experience AIM worked much quicker/easier on Windows than a few alternatives I tried. Another that has worked well is Yahoo Messenger.

Never tried sightspeed, couldn't hurt to try that as well I suppose!

Sorry about replying to my own post...

I gave Sightspeed a test and it works pretty well. Its main claim to fame is that it needs very little setup (UDP port 9000 only).

Video and audio quality were good during a test between Tokyo and Europe.

Upstream speed is obviously a key factor.

I just tried this because iChat AV would not work between two macbook's. Sightspeed is a great program. Who wants to video chat?

The latest Skype with video works reasonably well as well.

The Skype Video beta preview works well and enables me to talk with my family who happens to be using Windows XP (nobody's perfect).

Quality is surprisingly good with a fast connection and an iSight and a dedicated microphone.

Perhaps using dedicated microphone with Skype Video is the key, but with standard one that is under the left speaker grille on MBP the audio is pretty bad, unclear and lots of echo effect. While the same mic gives very good sound in MBP/iChat and PC/AIM video conference.
