I know that office is a great program, but it's going to cost me an extra 150 bucks to buy it, and I get Appleworks free w/ the iBook...

my question is, "Is office worth the extra money?"

I've used Office 2000 extensively (on ibm compat), and I'm very familiar w/ it and would like to have it on the iBook, but I also don't know if I need it as I have never experienced Appleworks...

your input is appreciated...

thanks!
How do I convince my wife to let me get an iBook?

Truth be told, many of your Office/Win skills won't do you too much good; Office/X is a very different beast. This is good in places and bad in others, but either way it means that you're pretty much starting off on a clean slate. That said, you probably have a lot of old Word documents lying around, and although AppleWorks' .doc handling is decent, there is no substitute for Office itself.

Really, it's a pity about AppleWorks. Back in the OS9 days, I would have recommended it without any reservations. But its original port to OSX was so bad that it permanently stained the reputation of Carbon, the API used to port it. Most of these problems have not been addressed in the two small updates which were released since that time.

I want to see AppleWorks get the attention it deserves from its own developers. I can't say I'm holding my breath, though. I recently switched to Nisus Writer Express for word processing, and I'm looking for a good spreadsheet replacement now.

Get Office. AppleWorks is a joke. As said before it used to be nice but it isn't worth it anymore.
