The first thing I always do with any 'Word Competitor' (We open Word docs!!! We have Word Import/Export!!! Send documents to your Word friends!!!) is open a particular document I use at work that is fairly long and is composed of multiple tables.

It has a header and a footer, many different fonts, bold, italic, etc. This file chokes Word 2004 on a mac. It's painful to use.

So I open the File in Nisus 2.1, and it looks great! Speed in scrolling, navigating this file is improved from Word, but not fast-tacular (Tm). So I make a small change and save the file.

Back in Finder, the icon has changed to reflect that Nisus is the default application for the .doc, not Word. So I open the file in Word. Uh Oh. Word wants to know how I want to 'convert' this file???? I choose the default (from rtf), and uh oh again. Everything has changed. All of my 10 pt Arial type is now 14 point Helvetica? WTF?

So without saving, I quit Word. Word does not prompt me to save either, implying that no changes to the file were made.

I open the doc again in Nisus, and all the fonts have change to bold italic!!!

So much for sending docs to my Word friends....

This app is nice, it looks great, and I'm sure it creates great documents for all of your Nisus friends. But until something comes along that works with Word, it just ain't happening for me.

My 2 cents.

ummm...

well yeah - I don't think Nisus said they'd necessarily export to word completely right - but if it imported correctly, you're pretty set.

The thing is, you either:

(1) Need to actually email word docs back and forth in word format because they need to be edited by your friends or whoever.

In this case you NEED word. It's a closed format that doesn't always convert well even within different versions of Word (or even the same version of Word on different computers). No (sane) amount of reverse engineering is going to change that. (Hell, you said Word 2004 nearly chokes on the document you used, right? - not surprising that after 1.5 round trips, it's not what it should be)

OR

(2) You don't need to email word docs back and forth because nobody needs to edit it with you. In this case, you can save as .pdf, and it doesn't matter what you use, since everything can produce .pdf files in OS X.

-------------------

More to the point - what changed with 2.1 vs. 2.0?

If the Word document was imported correctly, then save it as a .rtf... trying to convert it BACK to a Word .doc is asking for trouble, no matter what the application.
