I've been saving lot web pages to Word documents-- copy paste, about 100k.
Now I've tried pdf. they look even better, easier to do, but are about 700k.
I tried the archive thing did not reduce the size -- went to 668 k. meaningless.

Any other ideas I have not thought of?

Yes, utidjian's right - e.g., you could "View Source", copy and paste into text file with .html suffix. Especially good if you're just wanting the text. If there are graphics that you want to appear, you can download the whole page+images/site/etc with something like PageSucker:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13307

That's been pretty handy on occasion.

What do you mean by "need page to be live." It's no different than Word or PDF.

He's probably referring to the fact that saving HTML gives you no images unless you're connected to the net. Saving as PDF gives him all the images, but the files are too large for his taste.

When I click File --> Save Page As in Mozilla or Firefox on this page it saves it (by default) as 'showthread.php.html' and all the images and other stuff in a subfolder called 'showthread.php_files'. The page is complete... even the ads. The whole thing is about 44K for the main page and 144K of images in the subfolder. Simple.

Now if all he wants is plain text from the page that is another problem. Stripping a page down to plain text is non-trivial.

Yeah that's one of those nice things in Firefox/Mozilla that Safari doesn't do. I'd recommend he do it like you said.

Ok:
question number one:
When you save as html, this page here, for example, with the bugs on top of page, and several years later, this page gets yanked from the archives, -- it's no longer on Mac NN's server live -- will the page still come up as it's coming up now?. That's primary thing I need to know. then I'll ask another question.

there's an easy way to test this to see if you get what you want:

"Save" the page via whatever system you want to use.

disconnect from the internet (turn off airport, unplug the modem, whatever).

clear your browser's cache

load the saved page.

Whatever you see then is something you'll always be able to see - as long as you've got the saved file.

Well if you can wait several years for the answer

But to answer your question now, yes, Mozilla and Firefox will save it so that everything appears as it does now. I could care less about the ads but I get at least one frame if it is animated GIF or whatever. None of the buttons may work because they refer to the original website and may require cookies and whatnot. Basically it all depends.

When I save a webpage I am after the content not all the extra claptrap. Your requirements may be different.

I still think PDF is your best bet. Simple, clean & practically foolproof.

I know the Mac's default PDF files are a little heavy, but there are some good shareware apps that will significantly shrink the size of the PDFs. Check VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Ok, did the test, and it saved a long page, no images, but that was not so bad and was only 56 K.

Is mozilla or firefox free, do you have links to them? why can they keep the images but not Safari or Explorer or Netscape? wonder how big page would be with the images, 700k like the pdf?

You have exact name of the pdf compressor? a 700k pdf would compress to about what?

thanks!

If you're using Firefox, go visit

Scrapbook for Firefox

This will give you a snapshot ability, the way Internet Explorer did (and that was the only good thing about IE).

Or wait until Tiger comes out. Safari 2.0 will give you the ability to archive web pages as single files easier to mail, store, etc.

Yes, I used to love scrapbook on Explorer. Why did not Safari follow suit?

I will probably get Tiger -- it will then save the images too?
These other browsers are free or cost?

Safari may follow suit, once 2.0 is released with Tiger. You will have to pay for Tiger in order to get Safari 2.0 however.

Mozilla and Firefox are both free.

A quick search yields at least five apps that will do the trick. I've used PDFCompress and it lets you adjust the size of your PDFs depending on image quality, similar to JPEG compression.

Well technically it would be JPEG image compression since PDFs (at least OS Xs for sure) save all embedded images as jpgs.

Firefox is just the extensible browser, Mozilla includes all the other stuff they built in over the years (news, email, etc.).
