Why not use Adium? The core code is the same as GAIM, but the interface doesn't suck, and it has some spiffy features/OSX integration. No AV in either one yet, except on an experimental branch of GAIM.

last time I checked (this was a year ago at least, maybe more) you needed to run gaim through X11 for it to work on Mac.

Adium is great though. Much better than gaim on my Windows machine.

There are a few Mac OS X multi-protocol instant messaging applications. They're all pretty good, so give them all a go and pick the one you like:

Adium http://www.adiumx.com/
Fire http://fire.sourceforge.net/
Proteus http://www.proteusx.com/

Ran GAIM in X11 a while back on OS X, it's neat to see, but in general it was just slower than anything native (this was xDarwin, things may have changed). Great program on Linux, and it's good on Windows, but I use Adium on OS X (it always seemed the most native, though I appreciate Fire).

Props for finding about that "freeware", it's Open Source, somewhat different from freeware. Check out www.sf.net for an expansive archive of open source software (GAIM, GIMP, firefox at mozilla.org, mplayer at mplayer.hu, such things come to mind).
