If you have Virtual PC you could download NetZero or another one of the free services and use it that way. It isn't very fast of course but it would be free. It would be an expensive way to go if you had to buy VPC though.

You could always try www.550access.com

I used them for a few months for traveling. $5.50 a month for 150 hours of access. They have #'s all over the country. At that time if you purchased 6 months at a time you would get a discount. I don't think you would find a better price. It isn't free but it isn't $20 a month either.

Doesn't your broadband ISP support dial-in ? My ISP gives me the possibility to dial in when I'm not at home or away from a DSL line. Even in other countries where they have ISP's with a roaming agreement.

Don't forget that there are lots of free hot-spots in NYC as well (including the public library/Bryant Park - a personal favorite)

A couple more solutions:
1)Earthlink has a $10/10 hours per month dialup deal that's good all over the US.
2)If your mobile phone and carrier offer data service, you can use it as a modem. For instance, I can use my Samsung i500 on Sprint as a modem and get ~500k. Be careful, as this sometimes violates your mobile carrier terms of service.

It should be possible, but my phone doesn't have BT so I can't tell you exactly how.

Don't know how AT&T does it, but Sprint charges $15/month for unlimited usage, or else 1¢ per kilobyte. Since I don't use 1.5 megs a month, I go with the per-KB plan.

550 Access looks interesting. Does anyone actually use this? Can it be recommended?

I get 1000 minutes of voice and unlimited data (through GPRS as well as at their WiFi Hotspots) for $80 a month through T-Mobile. I can just hook my phone up to my Mac and surf away. If you don't want the HotSpot service, you can get it for $60.
