Setting the default view in Finder

I would like the default view in Finder to be in Columns. Is there a way to permanently set it like that? Didn't see anything in Preferences. (Mac 10.3.6)

Open a new finder window (cmd-N) and set it up the way you want it. Click the red close button at the top left of said window. Open a new window and your setting should be in effect.

Also you can enable a preference for this through the Finder:

Finder > Preferences > General > Open new windows in column view
