I've never been keen on using 3rd party IM apps and have been an iChat fan since day one, but just yesterday I decided to try a 3rd party app to be able to chat with people who use MSN and downloaded Adium.

After ten minutes of use I was simply liberated! It looks great, feels great, works great, has tons and tons of features and is so easy to use.

This app is everything I need and want in an IM - to be able to chat with everyone and in a simple and smooth way.

There are drawbacks to Adium, like it doesn't support audio/video chat or file transfer. Since I never use those features in iChat anyway it's no loss to me!

I just had to share this.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

And I do AIM ones quite often. Although sometimes they don't start. (guy on other end sits at "waiting")

Adium rawks

I also don't do file transfers... ever since people got firewalls, it's just too much pain. I would like to see voice chat added, though even the official Yahoo Messenger client on the Mac doesn't support it.

You'll want to ask Wesley Underwood if he'll make you a Mets version.

I see he has taken my Rickey Adium Duck and made it animated recently...the original creator of it for me was from Psiona.

I never was a fan of Adium before, I really didn't like the interface at all, didn't seem very flexible, and the contact list looked like ass. I try out these alternative IM programs once in a while to see if they're reasonable MSN substitutes, thats the only network that everyone around here uses and only I have two people on AIM that regularly I talk to. I was more of a Proteus guy, but even then, I couldn't join group chats and the like, so i settled for the official client after a while.

Adium 0.72 changes everything.

On MSN, it has fully functional buddy icons, group chats, and file transfers right out of the box. Add to that some elegant viewing and customizability options, and they have a client that honestly impresses me, especially compared to the earlier releases I tried.

Only thing it's lacking right now is the ability to go invisible, and see additional MSN statuses, but man, thats not enough to stop me from using the newly gorgeous program.

Good work, Adium Team!

Adium is a great little App, I'll probably use both iChat and Adium for a long time. Though if I can get a gateway with Jabber working with iChat I might only run iChat simply because iChat and the official AIM client are the only ones that can get through my school's EVIL Proxy.

Adium is a great little app and I love using it. However the file transfer works like @$$. All my friends use windoze pc's on the other end, can never receive or send files correctly. They start and then stop or don't work at all. iChat works flawlessly with sending files, you can drag and drop photos and the send file works great. If and when Adium works better with file transfers I'm sold. Of course audio/video would be nice too@

I'm pretty sure that the audio/video aspect of iChat has nothing to do with the AIM network. Having Adium support it would be nice, but considering they don't even code the stuff that makes it connect to the network, and just put a gui wrapper around other software, I doubt they will be adding support for audio and video any time soon.

But yes it would be very cool.

i actually found the opposite. i can't send files to other people using ichat or the official msn client but adium works perfectly. the downside is that you can't really see the status but if you open up console.app you can see what is going on.
the only thing that really bothers me is that i can't block people using adium and i can't appear offline. these are not major problems though so i'm happy.

Actually, go look at the contributors list on gaim, and the developers list on adium. Many similarities.
