Lycos released a screen saver for Mac and Windows that increases the costs for spammers by sending requests to their web sites.

What do you think about that?

I think it's odd that Lycos believes western Europe constitutes the whole world. Didn't this belief go out of vogue several hundred years ago?

Seriously, though, I want to know how they're getting spammers' addresses. Spammers usually fake it in their e-mails, so how do I know I'm not DDOSing some harmless dupe?

Just click the UK and you get the site in English language.

The "How it works" section says:

The servers used by the screensaver have been manually selected from various SURBL's and verified to be spam advertising sites.
Not sure what a SURBL is, but it looks like Lycos hand picked the sites to attack and not automatically generated from SPAM mail.

The site pops up with an ad for their email and web-hosting services. I'm starting to think this is a publicity stunt.

I downloaded it. It kinda freezes up the Screen Saver prefpane when you select it, but if you're patient and go off to do other things while it grinds, it eventually works okay.

Ironically enough, the Lycos servers are getting hit pretty hard though; the screensaver can only intermittently succeed in connecting to get its "hit list."

Feels good to be hitting back the spammers.

The service is no longer available. The web site now just says "Stay tuned".

Netcraft has some information about it.
