Could anyone recommend ways to do this that are very simple and straightforward. Also are there ways to do this strictly through software/hardware, without making use of any proxy services? Thanks .

iCab can do it if you mess with the settings.

What exactly are you looking for when you are talking about privacy? Are we just talking about not sending cookies back to the originator? or are we talking about hiding your IP? If it is the former, then pretty much every browser out there has a setting to turn off cookies, (and remember to turn off autofill if you are paranoid), but if you are looking for IP level, then you need to use a proxy service.

I am actually looking at masking my IP all together, so I guess I'll have to check into proxies... Any recommendations, I mean, so servives more mac friendly than others?
That new safari sthealth browsing sounds interesting. I don't think it would mask your IP address though...
Thanks guys.

Yeah, you just need an anonymous proxy. The "anonymous surfing" applications on Windows, that's all they do. Be aware that this still isn't anonymous, your proxy still knows who you are (your IP, or your info if you pay them), they have logs, maybe they say they delete logs after an hour but maybe they don't really, it's not anonymous, arguably better than nothing but also arguably worse than nothing (a central location, possibly logging all your webtraffic).

There was a website from a German university I think. But I don't remember the link. Otherwise there will be secure surfing in Safari for Tiger. This however will only support switching off auto-filling and the history, as far as i know.

This gizmo claims to do what I think you want. I don't know anything about it, I just saw it getting pimped in the NY Times tech section. Take a look and see if it'll do what you want it to.
