Here's my mini review:
I own Codetek V desktop and have used (and gave up on Desktop Manager)
Note:
I think they bought Desktop Manager. Its uncanny but then again only so much can be done with a UI of a VD app.
Review:
So far so VERY GOOD. I am super picky when it comes to these apps. I started out with Desktop Manager and really really wanted it to work. Long story short i gave up due to its bugginess.
I then switch to Codetek VD and have been using it for a long while. Codetek is VERY customizable. The only bad thing i have to say about it is that its SLOW. I own a dual 2.0 G5 and 2 apple 20" LCDs, switching desktops with all the windows i keep open, its really just a tad sluggish in switch.
You Software Desktop on the other hand is FAST (like desktop manager) and has a cool menubar icon that allows you to switch simply (like DM). i like this feature A Lot and missed this in Codetek.
So far it seems Codettek is a "little" more customizable but i see them catching app.
I don't care about applescript support but i think Codetek leads there.
I am currently having a problem trying to figure out how to move a window from one desktop to another using the pop-down menu. still need to read some more on that.
I also think they need to add a menu item that will allow me to move windows from one desktop to another. you can set to to any desktop but i can't target a certain desktop.
I just checked and in the background it takes no CPU and 5.5 megs of ram. VERY NICE.
As for the effects.... cool but. for me worthless. they are just too slow. (just like DM) i think it has to do with the fact that i have 2 screens and lots of rez (and am splitting the vram on my stock card.). i don't mind thought as i set my transition to NONE. and BAM! it switches so fast it will make your head spin.
this is what i like best. to me a virtual desktop manager should "stay out of the way" and just let me work. Codetek was a sluggish to the point that i was "aware" that i would be switching soon. Desktop manager was instant also but buggy.
You Control Desktop is the best of both worlds.
no mention of price but i will be buying. the current beta will time out in March.
This software made my week and i look forward to new versions...
