Is it possible to totally delete files?

I'd like to permanently and totally erase the files on my old Mac and
external hard drives before selling/donating it. That Mac is running OS
8.6 and I have both the internal hard drive and two external (SCSI) hard
drives.

I've read newsgroup posts and on Apple's site and I didn't find anything that
provided a definite answer.

Thanks.

In the program to format disks look for the option to overwrite with zeroes when formating. Though I don't remember whether that option was available in OS 8.6 already.
