Not sure if this is the right forum for this question. But I am trying to record a clip from the internet and save it to my hard drive. I am not talking about a movie. It is a car commercial that I really like and I would like to save it. I am not talking about downloading anything, I would need to play the commercial and record it at the same time. Would iMovie do something like this?

I think you're a bit confused (or at least making me confused), and it would help if you provided a link, or would tell a bit more about the source. If it's not a movie, is it purely audio? Or is it Flash-based?

And if it is a video clip, I don't understand why you wouldn't want to download it? The only option would be a screen-capture tool like Snapz, but that would be pretty bad for the quality, not to mention that you might end up with a file that's bigger than the original one.

Ambrosia's Wiretap will record audio if that's all you want.
Info: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/freebies/
Download: ftp://ftp.AmbrosiaSW.com/pub/freebies/wiretap.sit

For video and audio recording you'll need Snapz pro x:

If the movie exists as a link, couldn't you just Option+click the link to download and save it to your hard drive...

I think that's exactly his idea...to download the videoclip.

ASFRecorder (the GUI) has always been a bit weird for me. The only way I've gotten it to work is showing package contents and running mmsclient directly in the terminal.

Maybe if you showed us the URL we could better understand what you're talking about.

Unless he thinks it is material that might reflect poorly on him if he showed it to us...

Okay. If all you want is the file, here it is (option-click in Safari to download the link, or control-click, save link).

If you want to know how to download it, read on:
1. Go to that page in your browser.
2. View source.
3. Do Edit:Find "wmv" to find the reference to the movie.
4. Copy that url: http://g.msn.com/0VD0/03/26?m=ad_ford2_111804.wmv&csid=3&sd=MBR

5. Now open Terminal, and type
curl 'http://g.msn.com/0VD0/03/26?m=ad_ford2_111804.wmv&csid=3&sd=MBR'
Note the single quotes, which are very important.

This returns
Code:
<HTML> <HEAD><TITLE>Document moved</TITLE></HEAD> <BODY><H1>Object Moved</H1> This document may be found <A HREF="http://video.msn.com/asx/so.aspx?m=ad_ford2_111804.wmv&csid=3&sd=MBR">here</A> </BODY></HTML>
so we know to now try this next address.
6. Now type
curl 'http://video.msn.com/asx/so.aspx?m=ad_ford2_111804.wmv&csid=3&sd=MB R'
and we get
Code:
<asx version="3.0"><entry><ref href="mms://od-msn.msn.com/3/MBR/ad_ford2_111804.wmv" /></entry></asx>
This is an mms:// address, which curl can't handle. we need mmsclient.

As mentioned by yskar, ASFRecorder is a nice little Mac GUI for mmsclient.
So launch ASFRecorder, and paste in the URL:
mms://od-msn.msn.com/3/MBR/ad_ford2_111804.wmv

It will take a while, but eventually you will have the file.
Cheers!

This reply is for Mithras

Thank You very much for copying the commercial. That was some explaination of how to do it. I would never try something like that. I got it from your link. That's all I wanted was the commercial to save. Thanks again

This forum is great!
