Hi,

How do I know which codec to download incase I cannot play a movie file. I have tried VLC, Mplayer and Quiktime but the closest I get is with VLC which can play the sound only.

Thanks

You probably are missing the DIVX codec...

It's unlikely that he's missing the DivX codec since both Mplayer and VLC can play that. Get info on the file in VLC (Cmd-I) and see it there's a four-character code there for video (something like 'IV50').
If it's 'IV50' (or 'IV40' or 'IV30') it's Indeo Video, which can only be played in the Classic Quicktime Player after you've installed the Indeo Video codecs.
You can also try running the file through DivX Doctor, which might get you sound in QT.

Thanks guys, actually I should have mentioned that this file is a in a VCD folder, but anyway, now Mplayer is able to display a bit of the movie, but it seems corrupt somehow. When I do get info in VLC player it says "mpga" as codec. Is this format supported by Mplayer or VLC. Sorry if this is an extremely trivial question.

Sounds like a corrupt or incomplete file. 'mpga' is standard mpeg audio (including mp3) and it is certainly supported. So it's most likely not a matter of codecs but a matter of bad data.

In general (but won't help you with this file):

I'm on a G5. Is there any way to install this Indeo codec into my Classic System Extension Folder? Do I have to have root access? What do I do? I'm lost.

Yeah, just drag it there with the Finder.

I can't. I get the circle with the line through it. You mean in root, right?

I can;t boot into 9, so I have to do it in OSX.

Hold in the command (apple) key and it'll ask you to authenticate.

It won't let me do it. I tried holding down the Command key.

That is odd. It normally works for me. Did you try holding any other keys down? Anyway, failing that, you can just change the permissions on the Extensions folder to allow you write access.

I'm running 10.2.8, and didn't upgrade to 10.3, because my G5 was running good enough. I'll try just changing the permissions, though. Thanks.
