I'd like to be able to send a photo from an email message directly to iPhoto. Is there any kind of contextual menu or service to do this? iPhoto: Send Selection type of thing?

The only way I know is to "save attachment" in Mail, perhaps to the desktop, then open iPhoto and import that photo.

Good to hear this may be in Tiger. Drag and drop does work but is a bit of a pain.

Come on one of you developer guys! You can do this!

How so?

You drag the image out of the e-mail, and if you can't see the iPhoto window properly, hit Cmd-Tab (without letting go of the image) to switch, and let go.

"Pain"?

or drag to iPhoto in the dock, or activate expose using an F-key, or (no keyboard option!) a hot corner...

Well it's a pain compared to right clicking the photo, having a menu pop up, and sending it to iPhoto.

I mean I'm not losing sleep when I have to copy/past a url, but I love the convenience of being able to right click/service/open url.

You must be a convert from Windows...welcome! After you adjust to the Mac, you'll find that drag and drop is about as simple as it can get. Drag the photo from your email message to your iPhoto window and you're done!

Also, there is a big philosophical difference between Mac and Windows. On Windows, Microsoft wants to be your solution to every problem. So they try to anticipate every possible action you'd want to do and provide a hard coded solution (like a contextual menu). But what if you want your photo somewhere else? Maybe you don't want it in iPhoto. Hard coding limits your options and adds unneeded complexity because of the overwhelming number of options it must offer, while drag and drop is infinitely flexible and favors the user.

If you must have a programatic solution, I should mention that both Mail and iPhoto are scriptable. You could write a script to copy the picture from Mail and put it into iPhoto. Then you could put that script in your script menu.

Another way would be to put a folder on your desktop that is scripted to move any pictures placed in it to iPhoto.

And we'll see if Tiger's Automator has actions that will let you build such a solution.

Remember that old axiom about assuming? I've been a mac user for 10 plus years. I do have to admit my dirty little secret - I love 2 button mice. I know - heresy! The services menu is there. I like to use it. It works quite well with a 2 button mouse.

Thanks for the applescript idea. I'll see what I can come up with.

You neglected to mention that initially.

Yes, assuming a non-modifier-key right-click with Services menu is part of the equation, then ANYTHING that involves mousing around is a bit more trouble.

If you fail to specify, then of course people are going to assume standard-issue equipment.

One button.

Yeah, when I first read this scripting came to mind.

I thought, wow it'd be cool to email a picture from a camera phone (though I don't have one), to my acct with a particular subject, my mail client checks at home, and recognizes the subject, triggers a rule to run a script and copy it into iphoto. That way from work I could then ftp to my iphoto library, and get it onto my work pc if I wanted...hmm that'd be cool. Or have it sync it to my idisk-

Automator is probably perfect for stuff like this-

Lee
iPhone 3G 16Gb
24" 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac, 4GB/320GB/256MB
12" AlBook 1Ghz/768Mb/80Gb/Combo/AX
