Photoshop Elements 3.0 quits on startup

I am using OS X 10.2.8 on a Powerbook with about 800 mb of ram.

When I first installed Photoshop Elements 3.0 it would quit whenever I tried to save a file, do a print preview, or make modifications to the image. I followed various suggestions from the Adobe site and also from this one. The result, today the program now quits on startup.

However, I created a new account, without administrative privileges and the program works. I called Adobe Support and they suggested that, since the program works in another account, the problem is with the primary user account. I have tried repairing permissions using cocktail, reinstalling the software. I did make one change to something called global.plist, probably in error, because that was to repair a problem for non-administrative users who could not open photoshop.

My question: is there a way to repair the base, administrative account so that photoshop will work? Other programs appear to function normally.

Any suggestions from you experts out there appreciated. I am new to OS X.

One thing you might want to try, if you've not already, is to simply delete the Photoshop Elements preference file. Either delete it, or move it else where on your drive.

You can find it either by searching for a file called "com.adobe.Photoshop.Elements.plist" within the Finder, or in inside the Library folder, look in the Preferences folder.

You'll have to restore any non-default settings and you might have to register your copy again. But this can often be the easiest way to fix problems.

I tried your suggestion and reinstalled again. I am still having the same problem. The new account works, but the home or administrative account (which I set up when I got the Powerbook), does not work. Adobe support again confirmed that the only specific to their program is the preferences file. So the problem lies elsewhere.

Is there a way to transfer all my photos to the user that works?

Alternatively, is is possible to repair a user profile somehow?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I think I fixed the problem. Here is what I did:

I created a new folder on the desktop called "temp preferences"

I moved all the files in the user/library/preferences folder to the new, temporary folder. This meant there were no preference files in the user/library/preference folder.

I then restarted photoshop, which had been previously installed. It appeared to work normally, except for one error message about smoothing of fonts less than 8 points, which I fixed in system preferences.

I then compared the files that photoshop had created in user/library/preferences (there were about 8 of them) against the files in my temporary folder. I deleted each duplicate that I found in the temporary folder. I then moved all the remaining files from the temporary folder back into user/library/preferences. Photoshop started normally and now appears to be working. I will try to use the program further tonight to confirm.

After rebuilding my drive with a fresh squeaky clean 10.3.7, I was unable to install Elements 3.0. It quits with a "There were errors installing the software. Please try again" message.

I've tried:

1) Repair Permissions
2) Downloading a demo copy (assuming there is a new installer available)
3) Alternated target location
4) Even tried it from the sister drive which has Jaguar
5) Searched for everything Adobe and deleted all and started from the top

All to no avail. Now, having recently spent hours on a fresh install I certainly am not in the mood to muck with the system and frankly am more inclined to return the product.

Just a couple of shots in the dark ..

Is there an uninstaller app for Elements somewhere in the install folder?

Go to Library/Receipts/ and see if there is an old elements install package laying around ..
If so you can trash it ... then try installing again ...

Hi Stevme

You had the right idea ..

For future consideration ..

Applications Quitting?
If the issue occurs in one application only

1. Make sure you are using the latest version of the appication.

2. If the issue only occurs while using a specific document within the application, try creating a new document or replacing your document with a backup. Your document may be damaged. If possible, try testing with either a new file or a known-good file.

3. Trash the preference files associated with the application from your Preferences folder. Go To ...
Macintosh HD/Users/Home/Library/Preferences/"Application you're looking for" .plist
Sometimes there will be a "com." in front of the appications name ..
Try application again ...

4. Drag the application to the Trash and reinstall it if the issue persists. Certain Apple applications that may have been included with your computer (such as iDVD) can only be reinstalled by using the Restore CD that came with the computer.
