I'm looking for OS X-compatible software (preferably share- or freeware) that'll allow me to index and search multiple Word documents. I don't necessarily need to index my whole hard drive; basically, only to find and display all instances of a given word or phrase. Can anyone suggest something that'll do the job? There was some shareware program I used five years ago or so that did just this, but I can neither remember its name nor find anything comparable on MacUpdate, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

But can the Finder index documents, then search the generated index?

Get Info on the folder containing your documents, then click the "Index now" button. Use Finder File->Find to search for the content.

When Tiger comes out you will be able to do this with no problems. It's would be included for free with the OS. Until then you have to do it using find in the Finder.
