I installed VPC 7 (updated to 7.01) and loaded my copy of Windows 2000 Professional on it.

I was not expecting much after reading through the posts on this board. But to my great surprise and delight, it runs very well. This is on a first gen PowerMac G5 1.8 SP with 1.5gb RAM.

Now I would not attempt to run any games on it (other than Solitaire, lol). But for the run of the mill applications, it works good; better than decent, actually quite good. I could actually get some work done on it if push came to shove. I have a version of MS Office which I will install and report back on it's performance. But all the basic functions like opening windows, moving windows around and resizing them are good. Windows 2000 starts up nearly as fast as a real PC and it shuts down quickly too. I really like the way you can save the state of the virtual machine and restore it. That is very, very fast.

All that being said, I still would not give up my Macs and OS X for anything. It's always a treat to go back to the Mac side.

Perfect post, thanks. I'm just about to pull the trigger on a copy of VPC 7 myself. Thanks for the encouragement.

Well, no wonder. You have a G5 and 1.5 GB or ram.

I posted this under the wrong topic, anyone knows a solution?

-------
On a freshly installed Win XP with slipstreamed SP2 I cannot reach Microsoft sites, M$ UPDATEsites (not even Winupdate autofunction) etc.

All the other websites work.

Any idea? I never had those problems with Win 2k. Viruscheck was negative.

I'm running XP Home on VPC 7.0.1 and it's fine. Just turn off some of the dopey background stuff.

Something interesting to note. In VPC 6.0.1 if your drive was formatted as NTFS you could not mount it to your desktop....... now you can.
PowerBook 12" Combo 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 100GB HDD - Yep it's PPC! I'll wait for the 3rd generation MacTel when they're at their best :)

Key factors in boosting VPC performance with Windows XP is giving the virtual PC plenty of RAM and turning off much of the theme effects, including ClearType.

IMO, Win2K is faster under VPC than WinXP is. If you've got access to Win2K and that will satisfy your needs, give it a try.

Reading some of the posts, I was concerned also about purchasing, but I went ahead and bought v 7 with XP Pro. I decided to try the XP Pro included with VPC to see if it installs easier and runs any different than if it is installed with the "normal" separate WXP install CDs you use with PCs.

It did install in (what seemed to be) half the time and VPC7 does definitely run noticably faster. I use a PB G4 1.5GHz Al machine.
