Hello,

I've decided that backing up everything is a good idea. However, I don't seem to be able to backup everything on the startup disk with Backup. It says that there is 17Gb to backup if I check all the options, while I have about 30Gb on the disk, and I can't just add it to the list like you would think. I would use Carbon Copy Cloner, but it won't backup to CD or DVD, so what should I do to ensure that I backup everything that I need to.

Thanks for any help,

David

Why back up everything? All you really need to do is backup your iTunes stuff, iPhoto stuff, Movies folder, prefs and settings as well as documents. Once you re-install and then restore the backup just about everything will be the same as your original setup. Even with re-installing some apps you may not need to re-install the serial numbers of different apps.

If you want to back up EVERYTHING, you're going to have to use different software than Apple Backup.

How much data do you have? Backing up EVERYTHING to DVD is going to be a tedious (VERY tedious!) process. But you could use "impression" for this -- just be aware it's going to take you a while. I'd suggest if you want to do a FULL backup, that you actually do use an external hard drive and CCC for this. Then back up your DATA on DVDs.

You don't have to back up everything of course. But who wants to have to go back and reinstall all of your applications, etc.? Not me.

I have .Mac so I have Backup. It is very easy to use but does not back up your apps.

I bought SuperDuper. I also bought an external firewire disk which I would strongly recommend.

The initial backup took me about 45 minutes. After that, the next backups only backup what has changed since your last backup. Usually takes about 3 minutes.

These are completely bootable backups so if something really bad happens, you are up and running immediately.

You can also use SD to back up to CD's or DVD's as well if you like.
