So as far as I can tell, iTunes only allows 5 users to connect to a computer sharing music over the network. I was wondering if there is anyway to increase this number, or to set up a server that will act the same way and allow more connections.

We're all mac here at work, we've got a g4 who's sole job is to run iTunes so people can stream whatever music to their iTunes from that machine. Well, we've got more than 5 users, and being that iTunes doesn't kick idle users off means that it quickly becomes full and then stays that way.

So my question is: Is there a way to increase the max number of users OR to run another server that will act like iTunes, appear in other user's iTunes, stream whatever music they want to hear, and have a greater number of users?

Yes there is a 5 user limit to discourage Internet broadcasting. You might try looking at QTSS or check Versiontracker or Macupdate for something along those lines.

I'm not exactly trying to serve a single stream, I'd like users to be able to browse the entire library and listen to what they want to listen to.

See this thread. Although the server I set up was FreeBSD, there's apparently a Fink package for daapd (and mDNSResponder??) This should let you have a true iTunes "server" not dependent on having a user logged in with iTunes running to share out music, and I don't believe the 5-user limit applies.

Good luck!
