Which apps are people using for news reading/servers? I've settled on Thunderbird at the moment, because it's free and can render HTML messages.

Unison is by far the nicest, but I feel is let down because it can't render HTML at all.

What newsgroups do you read that have HTML posts?

Ugh, that's SO not how Usenet works... still like 40% of usenet readers are from the command line (trn, rn, pine, etc.) so HTML on usenet... BLECCH.

I use Unison, personally. Other decent alternatives are Hogwasher and MT-Newswatcher... just do a search on "usenet" on MacUpdate and you'll see lots of options.

My sentiments exactly. HTML doesn't belong on Usenet.

Maybe it doesn't, but co-existing with Windows users means having to put up with such things. (Unison can't make any sense of at least half the messages on my Uni's news server).

I don't think that has anything to do with Windows. What groups are we discussing?

You have to be on the campus network to view the groups. The Uni provides instructions for using Outlook Express as the preferred news reader under Windows, which I'm pretty sure is responsible for the influx of HTML messages.

That sounds painful. Sorry. Why can't your school set up some kind of message board and leave Usenet alone?!

My uni uses both. Their message board synchronises with their newsgroup, which in turn can email the messages to people, or send them via SMS.

Everything has to be text only because the messages could be in so many different formats!

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Well, that's how it should be.

I feel kind of old -- I had just graduated college when the internet really started to become mainstream (1999). I used to check my email in Pine!

I do like the new Google groups beta (that is designed like GMail) but have yet to feel completely at home - it just seems to take up too much space on screen.

I still use Thoth (was YA-Newsreader) even though the developer pulled it off-line.
